DAVID MACARTHUR, Mid Fleenas, Nairn.
Well-known Scottish judge David Macarthur from Nairn is taking charge of the Baby Beef judging this year. He farms 101 hectares (250 acres) and a herd of 90 suckler cows in partnership with his father, George.
David and his father also farm 121ha (300 acres) separately, with arable crops and a flock of 700 commercial Texel cross breeding ewes. The lambs are all finished and sold to Woodhead Bros, Turriff.
The sucker herd is predominantly Limousin and British Blue crosses producing Limousin cross calves. The top crop of the calves are sold in mid March weighing 300-350 kilos, and many regularly go on to feature in national calf shows including Borderway Agri Expo, Countryside Live, Scottish Winter Fair and Welsh Winter Fair. In 2011 David bred the Agri Expo Baby Beef Champion Pokeman. He has also bred 2 Smithfield Champions and ANM Christmas Classic Champion.
His judging role has seen him travel throughout Scotland during the summer show season, but taking the job of judging at the 2015 Borderway Agri Expo this is his first major event in the UK.
In judging the baby beef classes he will be practising what he preaches and looking for something similar to the traits in his own stock – something with good shape, correctness and a bit of character and show appeal.
