Thousands of visitors from all over the UK are expected to descend on Borderway Mart in Carlisle on Saturday 9th March, as Harrison & Hetherington host the UK Dairy Expo 2019, a showcase now firmly established as an international trade event for progressive dairy farmers and their suppliers.
Now into its eighth year, this year’s event, which is free to all visitors, will welcome over 400 head of world class cattle, 120 trade stands and, in addition to offering a unique hub for information and advice as well as practical demonstrations of the latest innovations to launch into the dairy sector.
Commenting on the upcoming event, David Pritchard, Event Organiser and Joint Managing Director at Harrison & Hetherington, said: “Specialist events in the agricultural industry are now pivotal for farmers to have a hub for relevant information and advice.
“The line-up for this year’s event has never been stronger. We have exhibitors representing every aspect of dairy herd management, from accountancy, breeding, building, nutrition, genetics, legal and veterinary to name a few.”
Some examples of what farmers can expect to see include the latest intelligent ear tag from Zoetis, that uses the movement of a cow’s ear to determine their health, heat status, feeding behaviour and location. Zoetis will also be available to discuss the latest developments in their genomic testing services, which they now offer through vets and NMR.
Graham Shepherd Animal Health will launch their new CYPTO Disinfectant, ‘TK Swordsman’. Cryptosporidium was involved in 57% of cases of scouring calves in a recent study, and yet it is resistant to most commonly used disinfectants. This new product, which has been Moredun-tested, is an important advancement in achieving the highest standards of calf-rearing hygiene.
Delaval will be demonstrating their range of clippers, including their Clipper R2; a new and improved battery clipper for cattle that replaces their existing clipper R200.
UK Dairy Expo is widely recognised as a major event for recognising the talents and achievements of the younger generation, and this year is no exception with the overall winner of the Showmanship Championships being the recipient of a trip, kindly sponsored by Toi Toi Genetics, to attend one of the industry’s most anticipated events, the European Confrontation, being held in Belgium.
The showring always proves to be a huge attraction for visitors, who are keen to observe the outstanding animals from all major dairy breeds. There are a total of 70 classes across the seven breed sections – Holstein, Ayrshire, Jersey, Dairy Shorthorn, Red and White, and Brown Swiss. In addition, the event will host the British Friesian National Show.
Acknowledgement of the calibre of animals on show at the UK Dairy Expo comes from the status of the international judges, who will travel from North America, Canada, and across the UK to join the 2019 team at Carlisle.
Once again, the John Dennison Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented at Dairy Expo, and will recognise a dairy cattle breeder, or exhibitor, judged to be a high achiever and excellent role model within the industry.
David concluded: “Carlisle is in the heart of dairy industry, and H&H are committed to supporting its future success by providing a dedicated event that portrays the very best in the industry. This year’s line-up demonstrates the strength of the dairy industry, the incredible talent it has and the support it has to succeed. It is inspiring to see the innovation and adaptability of all involved to ensure future sustainability.”
Success is also demonstrated through the continued support received from mainline sponsors; Holstein UK, CIS, Norbrook, Farmers Guardian, Carrs Billington and new for 2019, HSBC. Demonstrating the key role these organisations have in the industry, their presence and sponsorship also ensures the continued appearance of UK Dairy Expo as an annual event.
