Well-respected Auctioneer Joins Wooler Mart

6th June 2020

Harrison & Hetherington, Farmstock Auctioneers, Brokers and Valuers, has announced the appointment of Colin Smith as Auctioneer and Fields Person, to join the sales team responsible for the livestock trading side of the business at Wooler Auction Mart.  This is a key appointment for Harrison & Hetherington, the UK’s largest livestock trading company, which operates nine auction marts across the north of England and Scottish Borders.

Bringing decades of expertise, and a well-known and respected face in livestock trading, Colin’s appointment is a strategic one to boost the throughput of sheep sales at Wooler Mart. Colin has spent a lifetime working within the industry in the North East.  He started and learnt his career as an Auctioneer at Tyneside Auction mart.  When the mart changed hands, he moved to work for North East Livestock Sales at Acklington Market where he has worked for the last 36 years, the last 21 of which he was Mart Manager

In taking up his position with Harrison & Hetherington in this major livestock producing area of the country, Colin comments on his future aims:

“I am excited to be joining Harrison & Hetherington and using my experience and knowledge of the area to develop Wooler Mart as a strong and vibrant livestock trading centre. I am looking forward to the challenge and working with the team and using the experience of my colleagues in the other H&H Auction Marts to increase throughput and enabling a more varied and greater scale of sales, and obtaining more outlets.

“It is very important that an auction mart is a business-like hub with a friendly atmosphere where farmers from the local area can meet, discuss and debate. So I would like to encourage customers to take advantage of the extensive facilities available here at Wooler.”

Conducting all aspects of livestock marketing, farm-to-farm sales along with machinery sales, Wooler operates a mart every Wednesday.  It is also a collection centre of cast cows and regularly markets prime cattle and sheep direct to abattoir.

On welcoming Colin as Auctioneer for Harrison and Hetherington, Scott Donaldson, Joint Managing Director said:

“We are thrilled to have Colin join our team to specifically grow the livestock trading arm at Wooler.  He is very well-known, very well respected, and knows the area and understands the business inside out. He has built up long-lasting relationships with farmers and those in the livestock trade over many years, which is invaluable. An expert in all areas of farm auction marketing, from selecting prime cattle to selling farm machinery, he will be a valuable asset to Wooler Mart.”

Harrison & Hetherington is the appointed auctioneers for all major beef, dairy and sheep breed societies throughout the UK. The farmstock business is well known and respected by pedigree and commercial farmers nationwide and in specialist fields worldwide. Based from Wooler, Colin can be contacted at the Wooler office or on 07368 149330.

All the H&H marts work alongside the expertise of many of the other branches of H&H Group, which includes a land and property division including chartered surveyors, as well as a rural insurance brokerage and printing arm.
