Dispersal Sale of the Lessnessock Dairy Herd

12th February 2020

PASTTIME & HAYLEY BOTH SELL FOR 4,200GNS

One of the most well-known herds in world of pedigree Ayrshire breeding was dispersed at Borderway, Sale Centre in front of a massive crowd of buyers.  The Montgomery family from Lessnessock Farm in Ayrshire have been at the forefront of Ayrshire genetics from the early days of the breed exporting Lessnessock cattle to Canada, South America and South Africa helping to establish the breed in those countries.  Along with their prize-winning Ayrshires was a super herd of Holstein cattle that have developed in more recent years.  Trade topped at 4,200gns on two occasions with the overall average for milking heifers coming to almost £1800 with 42 animals selling for £2000 or above.

There was a huge support from friends and neighbours with a large percentage of the sale going back to the Ayrshire and Wigtownshire area with a further 14 counties represented on the buyers list.

Topping the cows was Starlet Erie Hayley originally purchased as a calf in the Black & White sale.  This impressive young cow is a granddaughter of the two-time Royal Winter Fair and World Dairy Expo Champion RF Goldwyn Hailey regarded by many as Goldwyn’s greatest daughter.  This impressive young cow was sired by Windbrook and was due in May to Stantons Chief selling for 4,200gns to Robbie Scott from the Nethervalley herd in Ayrshire.

Her Kingboy Rambo heifer calf born in September sold for 2,200gns.  She had the Hayley stamp reminding breeders of the amazing frame and feet and legs of her famous great grand dam.  This winning show calf was purchased by David Leyburn from Ireland.

The milking heifers were exceptional and a credit to the Montgomery family.  Topping the heifers and joint top price was Lessnessock Provider Pastime sired by Progenesis Provider.  Her dam was bred by David Yates from the Meiklefirth herd in Castle Douglas and was a successful show cow wining Ochiltree Show as a Junior Cow.  This ultra-stylish heifer sold for 4,200gns going to the Sloan family and Jack Lamb Ltd. in Ayrshire.

Winning the All Britain Competition and wining Reserve Junior Champion at UK Dairy Expo as a yearling was the top price Ayrshire, Longwood Dreamer Marie.  Marie had one of the nicest frames an Ayrshire cow could have and was blessed with a very attractive mammary system.  She was due with her third in July to Gwynnog Primetime.  Her pedigree was as good as it gets going back to the Excellent 94 Marsh View Sabre Marie who gave over 60 ton in her lifetime.  Marie sold for 3,200gns to DFS Genetics from Devon.

Also selling for 3,200gns was Lessnessock Cushie 5 sired by Tristar Platinum and bred from an Excellent cow from the Ballygreggan herd from the Mull of Kintyre.  Cushie had won Reserve Junior Champion at the Royal Highland Show and Hon. Mention at Ayr in 2019.  She was purchased by Mr. Esquierdo from Ayrshire.
