Borderway Annual Spring Suckled Calves Show & Sale

20th March 2019

The annual spring show and sale of continental cross steers and heifers held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on 20th March due a fantastic entry of 906.

The pre-sale judging was very ably carried out by noted showman Mr James May, Bromsgrove who had 62 outstanding show potential calves put before him, said by many to be the best show ever seen at this event.

His overall champion came from first time vendors Messrs Robertson, Newton of Logierait, Pitlochry with their homebred black British Blue cross entry. This was a daughter of Strathbogie Kansas and out of a Craigatoke Butch sired Limousin cow. She went on to match the centre record of £8000 when selling to Mr G Small, N. Ireland and Mr B Duffton, Huntly.

Supreme Champion

Lifting the reserve supreme championship ticket was the reserve heifer champion consigned by Messrs P & A Jarman, Brow Top Farm, Branthwaite. Their red Limousin cross heifer is sired by Netherhall Jackpot and bred from the same Limousin cross cow that bred the 2016 Champion at this show. This heifer went on to sell for the day’s second top price of £6000 to Messrs Wilkinson and Marwood, Leyburn.

Reserve Supreme Champion

Messrs Jarman also claimed the steer championship with their Limousin cross Baby Beef entry, he sold at £2000 to the judge Mr J May, Bromsgrove. The reserve champion bullock, a pure Limousin from JC & SE Little, The Guards, Ireby topped the section when selling at £2500 to S & L Bett, Stirling.

Steer Champion

Wednesday’s sale was a roaring success with a huge ringside of buyers present resulting in a flying trade. The overall sale average of £1041 sees an increase of £2 on last year’s fixture, a feat deemed impossible in the current climate.
