The Blue Texel Sheep Society Spring Spectacular Sale held at Carlisle on Saturday saw huge demand for the small entry forward resulting the ewe hogg average up as much as £282 on last year.
The sale topped at 2800gns for lot 420 a pair of embryo lambs with their recipient dam from Stasa Moyse’s Saltire Blue flock. The lambs in question were bred from the flock’s show ewe Saltire Blue A Beauty who had won the aged ewe class at the Royal Highland Show in 2018 and sired by 2500gns Caryl’s Blues Captain. This outfit was purchased by Messrs Burleigh from Enniskillen.
The first lot into the ring sold for 1800gns, also from Stasa Moyse, a 2017 born ewe with her twin lambs at foot. The ewe Saltire Blue Britney was sired by Hackney Your Joking and her ewe and ram lambs were again by the flock’s new stock ram Caryl Blues Captain. The successful purchaser of this lot was Messrs Sinclair from Crookston, Midlothian.
Another embryo lamb from Stasa sold for 1600gns this was Saltire Blue Destiny, a ewe lamb out of the Hackney Your Joking daughter Saltire Blue Betty and also sired by Caryl Blues Captain.
Messrs Tippetts and Williams sold an imported Turbo Blue ewe with her ewe lamb at foot for 1200gns. The lamb, Hackney Donna, was sired by Hackney X-Factor and this combination was purchased by Messrs Hardman from Gloucestershire.
Also at 1200gns were four ewe hoggs all from Stasa Moyse and all sired by Hackney Your Joking. The first was Saltire Blue Cover Girl, out of an imported ewe who also bred the Champion at Carlisle in lamb sale in 2017. She was purchased by Messrs Stephenson from Market Weighton, York.
Cover Girl was followed into the ring by Saltire Blue Call Girl this time out of the flock’s oldest imported foundation ewe she was another to be purchased by Messrs Sinclair.
Saltire Blue Cow Girl was next, another out of an imported ewe and purchased by Messrs Stephenson and finally following her was Saltire Blue Caleigh a daughter of Saltire Blue A Touch of Class, who is one of the flock’s show ewes.
Messrs Stephenson purchased another ewe hogg this time from E & I Hartley’s Pendle flock. This was Pendle Chattocks who was sired by Hackney Xcel and out of a member of the flock’s show team, Pendle Abracadbra who 2nd prize at the Great Yorkshire Show as a lamb.
The final animal to reach the 1000gns mark was a ewe consigned by local breeder Hamish Currie, with her ram lamb at foot. This ewe was bred by the Pen-Y-Bec flock and sired by Sams Yama and her lamb Burnholm Dante was sired by Burnholm Braveheart and they were again purchased by Messrs Stephenson.
