Border and Lakeland Club Sale

17th April 2019

Premier Herd Winners Top Trade At Borderway

The April Border & Lakeland and Coloured Breeds show and sale held at Borderway, Carlisle had a fantastic offering of Holstein, Ayrshire and Jersey cattle.  Over 250 lots changed hands with the trade topping at 3,450gns for a special Ayrshire heifer with the overall average for all breeds in milk coming in at just over £1700.

Border & Lakeland Report

Once again the breeders and consignors to the Border & Lakeland monthly pedigree sale must be congratulated for the quality of the animals on offer.  Buyers had a wonderful choice of highly productive cows and heifers with a high percentage producing over 40kgs and many bred from deep cow families with excellent confirmation.  The Holstein trade was subdued compared to the previous month’s sale with the trade topping at 2,650gns for the Champion heifer to average £1727 a drop of just over £200 for similar quality.

The show was sponsored by Zoetis, David Allen & Advanced Nutrition and judged by local dairy farmer Donald Millar owner of the well known Trailflat Holstein herd.  His overall Champion went to Boclair Gambler Reizend consigned by the Brewster family from Glasgow winners of the Premier Herd title in 2017.  She was a stylish, long bodied heifer producing 45kgs and bred from seven generations of Excellent or Very Good dams all with massive production.  She was bought by Tip Top Dairy Farm, Ayrshire for 2,650gns.  The Boclair herd sold another four heifers to average over £2000.

The Reserve Champion went to another former Premier herd winner this time the Wormanby Herd owned by the Hodgson family near Carlisle who sold four heifers to average over £2100.  They won the Reserve Champion award with Wormanby Derby Lustre who was sired by Wormanby Derby and bred from eleven generation of Excellent or Very Good dams going back to Idee Lustre EX95, who was the Royal Winter Champion in 2001.  This cracking heifer sold for 2,300gns to Messrs Thomas near Carmarthen who also bought Wormanby Denim Linda for 2,250gns.

Cameron Baty from the Tynevalley Herd in Cheshire sold a fancy uddered heifer from his successful Katrina cow family that traced back to the breeding sensation, Glen Drummond Shower EX 14*.  Tynevalley Millicio Katrina was producing almost 40kgs and sold for 2,200gns to Messrs Thomas near Carmarthen.

Andrew Kippax owner of the Rusholme herd near Preston in Lancashire sold a number of deep pedigree heifers including Rusholme Caviar Flame sired by Gillette Caviar and bred from the Ralma Juror Faith cow family.  She was blessed with a perfectly balanced frame and fancy udder and was producing 43kgs and was bought by Messrs Thomas near Carmarthen.

The sale commenced with a semen and elite embryo auction.  Semen topped at 200gns for three doses of Braedale Goldwyn and embryos topped at 1,150gns for five Altitude female sexed embryos from Luck-E Advent Kandie EX95.  Other notable embryo packages included female sexed embryos by Doorman & Awesome from T-Triple-T Platinum EX94 that sold for 900gns and five Altitude female sexed embryos from Schluter Shelby Lee Red VG89 2yr that sold for 880gns.  These elite embryos averaged £804.

Ayrshire Report

The trade of the day went to the high quality group of Ayrshire heifers that were forward from Cuthill Towers, Morwick and Keirmans herds.  Topping this excellent group was the overall Ayrshire Champion heifer Cuthill Towers Leader Ray consigned by the Lawrie family from Kinross.  She was sired by West Spittal Leader, her third dam was Cuthill Towers Regal Ray EX94 who produced over 12000kgs as a five year old.  This ultra stylish heifer sold for 3,450gns to Welsh Dragon Farms who also bought Cuthill Towers Leader Bonnet for 2,250gns.

Craig Davidson from Errolston Farm near Gretna sold an outstanding Ayrshire bull from his Davidson Ayrshire herd.  Davidson Patriot was sired by Palmyra Berkely Regan, his dam is Maple-Dell Burdette Donna EX90 sister to the EX94 Trident daughter who bred the top type sire Dempsey.  This special young sire was bought by the Halmyre Herd near Castle Douglas.

Jersey Report

The Ribble Jersey Herd from Lancashire must be congratulated on the exceptional quality of the special group of 21 heifers they consigned to the April spring sale.  All the heifers were well grown and displayed huge potential to develop into amazing young cows.  Two heifers that need recognition in this report, firstly Ribble Topeka Clover sired by Topeka and bred from four generations of Very Good dams and all with impressive production.  Clover was due to River Valley Circus Craze (sexed) in May and could be a heifer to lookout for in the summer show circuit this year.

Once again FDL Barcelona daughters came to the top this time it was Ribble Barcelona Marqi who caught the attention of the ringside.  This January born calf oozed style and sold for 1,050gns topping the heifer calf section and now goes to M. King in N.Ireland.

Topping the Jersey trade was a grand daughter of the Queen of the Breed, Duncan Belle consigned by Rob & Yvonne Willison from Kendal.  Helisington On Time Belle was sired by On Time and bred from an EX94 Whistler dam.  This perfectly balanced heifer was sold for 2,300gns to Cowhill Trust, Dumfries.
