Border and Lakeland Club Show and Sale

15th May 2019

Borderway was baking in sunshine for the May Border & Lakeland Holstein club show and sale where trade topped at 4,000gns for a young Holstein bull, heifers topped at 2,700gns to average almost £1900.  With a number of big events taking place in the area and many milk producers focused on making silage this week the normally packed ringside was quieter than is customary for this popular sale.  Trade however was buoyant and once again the breeders and consignors must be congratulated on the incredibly high standard of the animals on offer.

The show was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and Advanced Nutrition and judged by the recent winner of the Young Farmer’s Senior Member of the Year, Mr Eamon Monaghan.  His Overall Champion went to Espland Impression Madge consigned by the Cannon family from Appleby.  Sired by Monument Impression and bred from two outstanding Excellent dams by Goldwyn and Ignitner.  She sold for 2,500gns to Lakeland View Holsteins in Wigtownshire who also purchased Petteril Dynamic Sweetly for 2,350gns.  She was a classy, silky, long black heifer with a world class udder giving 36kgs.

Overall Champion – DD & AI Cannon (Vendor) & Eamon Monaghan (Judge)

Reserve Champion went to Eryl Done, owner of the Wyevalley herd in Northumberland who consigned Wyevalley Mcfly Sue sired by the outcross sire Foxberry McFly.  This beautiful young cow was fresh in her second and was giving 42kgs and bred from four generations of Excellent dams the third dam being the all Britain Nominee, Bilsthrope Sue EX95 who gave over 120 ton lifetime.  She sold for 1,850gns to the Rudd family near Kirkbride.

Reserve champion – E Done (Vendor) & Eamon Monaghan (Judge)

Two special young bulls were forward from the Annandale and Wormanby Holstein herds and both bulls attracted much interest from near and far.  Selling for 4,000gns and the overall top price of the day was Annandale Motiff sired by Annandale Mayday.  He was bred from the Meadow Bridge Megan cow family and backed up by ten generations of Excellent or Very Good cows all with massive production.  He was purchased by A Scott from Orkney.   Wormanby Diego was sired by Seagull-Bay Silver Kimball and bred from six generations of Excellent cows his dam is the winning five year old from last year’s National Holstein show, Wormanby Braxton Dellia.  Diego sold for 1,800gns to A McCauley from Portrush, N. Ireland.

Topping the trade for milking animals was a heifer that did not take part in the pre sale show, Wyndford Magnus Rebecca was consigned by Jim Gray from near Glasgow and sold for 2,700gns to Alan Paul from N. Ireland.  Rebecca was bred from a super line of the ‘Roxy’ cow family and was giving 42kgs with the first four generations all classified Excellent or Very Good with lifetime yields over 100 ton.  Sister to her grand dam was exported to Spain back in 2006 through the EX Factor sale and went on to be Reserve Junior Champion at the European Show in Italy in 2007.

The Wilson family from Skirwith Hall Farms sold three heifers to average £2135 topping at 2,450gns for Stowbeck Euclid Lies sired by Silverridge Euclid and was producing 38kgs.  She now joins the herd of J McCulloch & Sons in Stranraer.

One of the UK’s best Holstein herds is the Petteril herd of Stephen and Ann Morley, sold four heifers in total to average £2170 including Petteril Dynamic Carol sired by Berryholme Dynamic and bred from their amazing ‘Carol’ cow family renowned for their ability to make huge lifetime yields.  Carol had a special mammary system and a rump structure copied straight from the true type model, she sold for 2,200gns to the Little family near Wigton.

It was encouraging to see an improved trade for in-calf heifers, they topped at 1,520gns on numerous occasions to average £1452.  One of the heifers to sell for 1,520gns was Churchbeck Beauty consigned by E & JW Wilson from Brampton.  She was sired by Urbain and was purchased by A. Hunter from Wigton.

Wyevalley Genetics from Northumberland sold 13 young heifers and heifer calves to average £882 and topped at 1,600gns for Wyevalley Arbor Rachel Red.  This stylish polled heifer was sired by Pine-Tree Arbour and from the famous ‘DRA August’ cow family.  Her fourth dam was the Excellent 95 pointed Faber daughter that sold for 16,000gns in the Rockset sale in 2007.
