Drointon Delivers At June Club Sale

Once again the breeders and members of the Border & Lakeland Holstein club must be congratulated on the quality of the animals consigned to June show and sale.  Buyers were given a choice of the very best cattle many producing large volumes of milk with heifers giving up to 45kgs and a number bred from attractive pedigrees.  Trade topped at 4,500gns to average over £2000 for every lot sold with buyers from eighteen counties on the buyers list from Aberdeen in the north and Pembrokeshire and Wiltshire in the south.

The show was sponsored by Zoetis and Advanced Nutrition and expertly judged by Stewart Wilson from Blackbyres Farm near Glasgow.  His Overall Champion went to the winning Senior heifer in milk Espland Alison 6 consigned by Alan Cannon from Espland Farm, Appleby.  She was sired by Zelgadis and bred from a Monument Impression dam and sold for 2,300gns to Messrs Robinson from Lanercost, Brampton.  Three other milkers from this home sold to average £2338.

Overall Champion – l/r Rob Horn (Zoetis), Richard Bainbridge (advanced Nutrition), Scott Horn (Handler), Mr Stewart Wilson (Judge)

The Reserve Champion went to Rockset Relay Lana 2 consigned by Jim & David Gray from Drumtall Farm, East Kilbride.  This perfectly balanced heifer was sired by Rockset Relay and bred from six generations of Excellent or Very Good cows the fifty dam being the amazing bull dam Comestar Laurie Sheik.  She sold for 2,500gns to Leak Dairy Farm in Wales.

Robert Steel from the Kepculloch herd near Glasgow sold three heifers to average £2450 including two heifers at 2,500gns.  The first was Kepculloch Fry Summer sired by Doorman Fry who’s grand dam was the Royal Highland Champion in 2005 Altona Lea Rudolph Summer EX95 and the second was Kepculloch Fitz Mary sired by Fitz and bred from seven generations of Excellent or Very Good cows.  They were purchased by Jim Barr, Fife and Jim Brown, Kilmarnock respectively.

The overall top price of the day went to Drointon Absolutely Flashy Marqi Red consigned by Andrew and Debbie Mackellar in Staffordshire.  She flirted with perfection and was bred from a deep pedigree of sixteen generations of Excellent or Very Good dams and sold for 4,500gns to Peter Kemp from Aberdeenshire.  Mr Kemp also purchased Drointon Silver Rosie for 3,000gns. She was sired by Silver and her Grand dam was the Excellent 96 pointed Ridgefield Shottle Rosie.  The special consignment of six calves from Droinoton averaged over £2500.

Alan Cannon from the Espland herd sold five in-calf heifers following the milkers and topped 2,000gns for Espland Meridian Alison 5.  She was sired by Numero Uno and was due in July to Argronaut (sexed) and was bought by Messrs McColm near Stranraer.  This fantastic group of in calf heifers averaged £1916.
