EQUINOX IS ALL THE TALK IN OCTOBER

The October Border & Lakeland show and sale was packed from start to finish with cows and heifers all giving oceans of milk and many bred from valuable pedigrees.  In total 177 dairy cattle sold with trade topping at 3,800gns with 69 milking heifers averaging £1831.  A large crowd of buyers travelled from across the UK resulting in cattle travelling to sixteen counties from England Scotland & Wales.

The show was sponsored by Zoetis and Advanced Nutrition and judged by one the Border & Lakeland’s young rising stars Tom Blamire from the Whinnow herd.  He tapped out Bankview Murry Lady as his Overall Champion consigned by Mark Walton from Kirby Stephen.  Lady was freshly calved in her second having completed an impressive heifer lactation and was producing almost 50kgs per day.  She sold for £1800 to Matt Stephens from Winter Tarn Farm.

Probably the most talked about cow in Europe this year has been Riverdane Ashlyn’s Gold who won her class at both the European Show and National Holstein Show and selling from this amazing young cow was her Walnutlawn Slater son consigned by the Wilson’s from the Warnelview herd.  Warnelview Ashley sold for the overall top price of the day and now joins the Jackson’s herd at Guillyhill Farm in Dumfries for 3,800gns.

The sale was concluded by 69 yearling heifers from the Luckow Holstein herd in Germany.  They were sired by some of the best sires from the Alta stud and selected by Robin Loxam.  They sold to a top 9,00gns for a daughter of AltaExpat and bred from a high yielding Surefire dam.  This well grown group averaged £772.
