CAVIAR TOPS THE MENU AT BORDERWAY

The August Border & Lakeland and Summer Coloured Breeds sale held at Borderway, Carlisle was an outstanding event for all involved.  Buyers had a wonderful array of dairy cattle to choose from all producing massive amounts of milk and many with valuable pedigrees.  A huge crowd from the four home nations and the Rep. of Ireland saw the trade peak at 3,100gns to average just short of £2000 with 38 animals selling for or above £2000.

The show was sponsored by Zoetis, Cogent and Advanced Nutrition and judged by John Whiteford owner of the well known Middle Ayrshire herd in Cumbria.  His overall Champion and Champion Udder went to Espland Caviar Maisie consigned by Alan Cannon, Espland Hill, Appleby.  Maisie was sired by Gillette Caviar and bred from a Windbrook dam with super production, she had a very special udder and a powerful frame and sold for 2,900gns to the Vance family near Newton Stewart.

The Espland herd were on top form winning Reserve Champion with Espland Avril 8.  She was sired by Zelgadis and bred from a Pine-Tree Sid.  Avril was a long silky hided heifer that oozed milk and sold for 3,100gns to the Brewster family near Stirling.  Espland sold another four heifers to average over £2700 with heifers sired by Mogul and Zelgadis.

World famous cattle photographer Jane Steel had consigned Lomond Goldwyn Ashlyn sired by the one and only Braedale Goldwyn.  Ashlyn’s sister by Shottle had sold for 8,000gns in the May 2012 Border & Lakeland sale and another sister by Damion is now Excellent 94 in the Ards herd in N. Ireland.  Her third dam is the legendary World Dairy Expo and Royal Winter Fair Champion Tri-Day Ashlyn.  This special heifer sold for 2,900gns to the High Whinnow herd owned by Janice & James Taylor, Thursby, Cumbria

The Stowbeck herd consigned five terrific heifers averaging close to 40kgs of milk and all young with July and August birthdays.  This fabulous group of amazing uddered heifers topped at 2,700gns to average almost £2400.  The best of this consignment was Stowbeck Punch Ester sired by Roylane Boxer Punch with a PLI+£384 who sold for 2,700gns and Stowbeck Goodwhone Anne sired by TW Goodhone who sold for 2,600gns both going to the Brewster family near Stirling.

The prize winning Wormanby herd sold a number of high yielding cows and heifers some giving over 50kgs.  They topped with Wormanby Jessic Linda, sired by Gillette Jessic and bred from six generations of Excellent or Very Good cows from their prolific Linda cow family.  This stylish cow maker sold for 2,400gns to Messrs Agnew, Stranraer.

The Baillie family from Over Dalserf Farm sold twelve perfectly balanced young heifers all with impeccable mammary systems and super legs and feet.  They topped at 2,500 to average £2100 with Dalserf Mesdood Corneliske topping at 2,500gns.  She was sired by Denmire Mesdoor bred from three generations of Excellent or Very Goods.  Selling from the same cow family for 2,400gns was Dalserf Skoda Corneliske sired by Pine-Tree Altaskoda.  Her first two dams were Excellent with yields over 13000kgs.

JERSEY’S IN HIGH DEMAND  

The Jersey’s on offer were excellent quality with only a small number in milk followed by some special in-calf heifers and heifer calves.  The Howie family from Wellhouse Farm, Stranraer sold eight Jerseys many from show winning and deep cow families.  They topped the trade with Wellhouse Topeka Sally selling for 2,100gns going to Hannah Graham from Hillhead Farm, Annan.  Sally was sired by Topeka and bred from the 2011 Stranraer Interbreed Champion Wellhouse Ringmaster Sally EX91.

Miss Graham also purchased Wellhouse Shine Spry for 2,050gns.  Spry was due to calve in September and was sired by Freeman Blackstone Shine, her fourth dam was Tixall Paramounts Spry EX94 who bred the 2014 Royal Highland and the 2015 Dumfries Champion by Festival and Action respectively.

In-calf heifers were in demand, they averaged £1726 with a nice consignment of Danish Jerseys from J&W Baillie, Hillhead topping at 1,900gns.  Tinto Hama Beatrix was sired by Hickey Hama and was due in October to Link (sexed).

In a short period of time the Pye family have developed the BAYVIEW pedigree Jersey herd into one of the most highly regarded herds in the UK.  The herd has won the Lancashire Milk Records & Lakes Large Herd competition for the last number of years and the opportunity to buy 30 bulling heifers was relished by breeders from across the UK.

The Bayview heifers all displayed massive potential and topped at 1,300gns for Bayview Tequila Hope. She was sired by top type sire Tower Vue Prime Tequila and bred from six generations of cows to either classify Excellent or Very Good with butterfat close to 7% and protein over 4%.  This ultra stylish heifer was purchased by Messrs Nuttall, Blackburn.   The Nuttall family also purchased Bayview Tequila Parade for 1,200gns.

Martin King from N.Ireland purchased Bayview Fizz Thistle for 1,200gns.  She was sired by J-Kay Tequila Fizz tracing back to a special third dam, Shellen Progress Thistle EX94 3E.

Ayrshire Heifers Meet Brisk Trade

The Stevenson family from Kirminnoch Farm, Stranraer sold sixteen very milky Ayrshire cows and heifers topping at 2,000gns to average £1755.  Topping this consignment was Stevenson’s Nova sired by Stevenson’s Argo and bred from Very Good 85 dam.  She was bought by Messrs McCulloch, Stranraer.
