Border & Lakeland Club Sale

18th September 2019

Quality Holstein cattle packed the Borderway Sale Centre for the September Border & Lakeland monthly show and sale.  The event had attracted outstanding milking cattle and classy youngstock many with elite pedigrees from across the north of England and Scotland, this had enticed buyers from across the UK and Ireland to this premier event. The ringside was not as busy as normal with the pleasant autumn weather luring famers to get important field work completed however trade was brisk with 31 animals selling for £2000 or above with milking heifers topping at 3,200gns and young heifers topping at 5,500gns in the Carldanton heifer sale

The show was sponsored by the Paragon Veterinary Group and Advanced Nutrition and judged by John Harrison owner of the prize winning Crossrigg Holstein herd near Penrith.  His overall Champion went to Lomand Asher Tory consigned by professional cattle photographer Jane Steel from near Glasgow.  Tory was bred from a VG88 Atwood who won the same event in October 2017 and was purchased by the Booth family from N. Ireland.  Tory oozed style and sold for 3,200gns to the Nethervalley herd of Robbie Scott with another two heifers from the Steel’s selling to average £2660.

Six super heifers were sold from the Errolston herd of the Davidson family from Gretna to average £2079 with their top heifer selling for 2,400gns to the Caldwell family from Maybole in Ayrshire.  She was Errolston Superstar Ricki sired by De-Su AltaSuperstar and bred from an AltaIota dam followed by an Excellent 91 Damion who is full sister to the show winning Excellent 96 Damion Ricki.

Balcurvie Holsteins from Fife sold thirteen very milky heifers topping at 2,200gns for Balcurvie Jareb Bee who was sired by Hartline Jareb.  She was giving 36kgs and was purchased by Mr Haston from Maryport.

There was a well grown group of heifers consigned by the Colquhoun family from Angus.  These heifers were sired by Cookiecutter Hang-Time, Progenesis Provider and Siemers Mogul Pety and had been running with the Angus sire for three months.  They sold to a top of 1,150 to average £1113.

One of the big attractions at the September Border & Lakeland sale was the special consignment of young heifers from the Carldanton herd of Anthony Grimshaw who farms in the City of Bolton.  This exceptional herd was established just over fourteen years ago and since then Anthony has invested in some of the very best cows in the UK, owning cows such as Lavenham Adeen who was Grand Champion at UK Dairy Expo, Agriscot and the Great Yorkshire show in 2013.

This very attractive group of heifers opened with a daughter from Anthony’s current herd favourite, Carldanton Reflection Mahogany EX90 who is the tenth successive generation of Excellent Roxy cows.  Her daughter was sired by Lesperron Stronger and backed by an outstanding sire stack of some of the best Red & White Holstein sires in the breed.  Carldanton Stronger Mahogany sold for 4,000gns to Colin Irwin from N. Ireland.

The star lot was Carldanton Sidekick Adeen sired by Walnutlawn Sidekick and bred from a very special line from Chief Adeen.  Her dam is Carldanton Brokaw Adeen who placed third at UK Dairy Expo in the Junior three-year-old class and who’s sister by Goldwyn was the top seller in the Holmland dispersal at 14,500gns in 2012.  Next dam is Lavenham Adeen who was Grand Champion at UK Dairy Expo, Agriscot and the Great Yorkshire show in 2013.  This picture-perfect heifer sold for 5,500gns to Scott Forsyth from Newton Stewart.

Another Adeen family member by Kingboy from a Mardi Gras dam sister to Carldanton Brokaw Adeen sold for 2,600gns to Robert Steel from the Kepculloch herd.  This long stylish heifer combined all the great traits of this special cow family and looked like a carbon copy of the great Chief Adeen.

Investing in great cow families always pays and the Tri-Day Ashlyn cow family is at the very top of this list.  The original cow was Riverdane PS Ashlyn that Anthony purchased following a successful day at Agriscot as a two-year-old.  This super powerful cow went on to classify Excellent 94 and has bred numerous special daughters.  Selling for 2,500gns was a Lambda grand daughter from this prolific cow who now joins the Woodcatt herd near Penrith.

Also selling for 2,500gns was the youngest calf from this remarkable group. Carldanton Diamondback Lili was bred from a VG86 Awesome Red, from a VG88 Atwood, from an EX91 Talent, from a VG87 Advent then the famous Thiersant Lili Starbuck EX94 who was the foundation member of the Lila Z cow family.  This very pretty heifer was purchased by the William Oldfield & Tom Riley.

The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on Wednesday 2nd October and features over 300 dairy cattle in the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale.  This sale includes the dispersal of 125 Fleckvieh cows, 100 freshly calved cows and heifers, 20 dry cows due in November, 40 in-calf heifers and 30 Montbelirade cross bred bulling heifers.  The catalogue for this sale will be available online at
