Border & Lakeland Holstein Club August Sale

BANKVIEW HERD TOPS BORDER & LAKELAND SALE

Borderway, Carlisle was brimming to capacity for the August Border & Lakeland Club sale which also included the Summer Coloured Breeds Sale and the Gwynnog Ayrshire Youngstock dispersal.  In total 229 lots changed hands with Holstein topping at 3,600gns for Lillyhall Chief Alysia resulting in an overall average for Holstein milking heifers of £2044.  Buyers from across the UK and Ireland packed the ringside with strong demand for all breeds and huge interest for the special kind.

The show was sponsored by Zoetis, David Allen and Advanced Nutrition and judged by Harry Roper from Preston who made Boclair Sid Elegance his Overall Champion.  She was consigned by the Brewster family from Glasgow and was sired by Pine-Tree Sid and bred from a VG88 Mincio dam with over 16000kgs.  The 6th dam was the Excellent 96 Krull Broker Elegance.  This super udder heifer sold for 2,400gns to the Judge.

His Reserve Champion went to Ernespie Delbert Petra consigned by David McMiken from Castle Douglas.  She was sired by Delbert and was from the Windy-Knoll Promis cow family.  She sold for 2,400gns to the Green Grass pedigree herd in Ayrshire who also purchased Tynevalley Abbott Bria consigned by Cameron Batty for 2,400gns.  Bria was a stylish, long heifer with an outstanding udder and bred from 14 generations of Excellent or Very Goods dams.

Topping the trade for the milking heifers was Bankview McCutchen Carol consigned by Mark Walton from Kirby Stephen.  She was producing 38kg and was sired by top type and udder specialist De-Su McCutchen.  Her dam produced over 60ton and the grand dam was an Excellent 92-pointed cow with huge production.  Carol sold for 2,600gns to Green Grass Holstein in Ayr.

Skirwith Hall Farms sold six tremendous udder heifers topping twice at 2,350gns first for Stowbeck Fry Connie sired by Doorman Fry and the second for Stowbeck Superhero Connie sired by Superhero.

In-calf heifers sold below their true value and looked exceptional value for money topping at 1,900gns to average £1315.  Topping this fine group was Enchanted Gaborik Lena consigned by Enchanted Holstein from Lancashire she was sired by Vision-Gen Gaborik and bred from a super line of cows with massive butterfat and protein and was bought by Mr Purdie from Wigtownshire.

Lillyhall Youngstock Sale

Matthew and Ruth Harper from the Lillyhall and Lambroda herds sold ten exceptional Holstein and Brown Swiss heifers from their best cow families.  This special group of heifers topped at 3,600gns to average £2257.

The heifer that had everyone talking before the sale was Lillyhall Chief Alysia sired by Stantons Chief and bred from a VG88 three-year-old Doorman that placed 4th in the Junior 3yr old class at UK Dairy Expo in March.  Her grand dam was Ortongrange Snowman Alysia EX94 that sold for 10,000gns in the Passion for Pedigree Sale in 2016 and went on to win Grand at the Balmoral Show in 2017.  This close to perfect heifer goes to N. Ireland to Mr Paul in Londonderry.

Topping the trade for the Brown Swiss breed was Lillyhall Famous Sunkist sired by Brown Heaven Famous and who’s third dam is the amazing Snickerdoodle EX94.  She was Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2008 and was an eight-time winner on the coloured shavings. She was purchased for 2,300gns by Mr Kirk from Lutterworth.

Nethervalley Jersey Sale     

In a short space of time the Scott family have achieved great things in the Jersey breed winning National Shows in Scotland and England with their much-admired cows.  This special group was all of the 2018 born Jersey heifers from their prize winning cows.  Topping this sensational group was Nethervalley Engineer Vivacious bred from ten generations of cows that have classified in the top two grades.  Her fifth dam was Veronica EX97 a Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2007 and the best breeding Jersey without exception.  She sold for 3,400gns to the Auchlane Farming Company near Castle Douglas.

Selling for 2,400gns was Nethervalley SS Tequila Regina and bred from the unbeaten Monument Chrome Regina VG88 2yr.  She has won at UK Dairy Expo, Royal Highland, Ayr County and Agriscot as a two year old and has almost produced 10000kgs in her first.  Regina oozed style and class and now joins the Ashlea Jersey herd of the Robertson family who farm near Bristol.

The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on Wednesday 4th September and features 220 dairy cattle in the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale.  This sale includes a special consignment of 83 very milky cows and heifers averaging 34kgs from Crossfell Holsteins.  The catalogue for this sale will be available online at www.harrisonandhetherington.com
