Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Autumn Bull Sale

16th September 2019

The 31st Annual show and sale of Holstein and British Friesian bred bulls held on behalf of the Border & Lakeland Holstein club featured 69 outstanding bulls all bred from the best cow families in the breed.   Milk producers and breeders travelled from across the UK and Ireland to see a new record price of 8,200gns achieved with Holstein bulls averaging almost £3000.  There was a slightly subdued demand for British Friesian bulls with a number not sold however they topped at 3,200gns to average £2352.

The event was sponsored by Coomara Veterinary Group and professionally judged by Wilson Patton from the prize winning Ards Holstein herd in Northern Ireland. His Overall Champion bull was Annandale Neste consigned by WJ Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat.  He was a son of Mogul and bred from the Nugget cow family originally developed by the Pilkington family from the Aintree herd.  This close to perfect young sire sold for a new Borderway record price selling for 8,200gns to the Innes family from Nairn.  The Annandale herd sold another nine top quality bulls from their highly productive herd to average £3244.

The Reserve Champion went to Warnelview Spruce, consigned by the Wilson family from Wood Farm near Thursby.  He was a son of R-E-W Seaver and bred from ten generations of Excellent or Very Good cows with the grand dam, third and four dam averaging 100 ton of milk in their lifetime.  He sold for 3,700gns to J&K Forsyth from Ayrshire.  The Warnelview herd sold another seven bulls to average £3375 including Warnelview Burgh who placed second in his class and sold for 3,900gns to Mr Neil from Stranraer.

One of the most sought after prizes at this premier event is to be named Production Champion and picking up the 2019 accolade was Annandale Marti consigned by WJ Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat.  Marti was sired by Seagull-Bay MVP and was from the heart of the Denmire Marie cow family.  His dam gave over 16000kgs as a five year old at 4.56% butterfat and the next four generations were all classified EX94 with over 400 ton of milk produced in their lifetime.  This long black dairy bull sold for 3,000gns to Mr Lee in Northern Ireland.

There was a large offering of British Friesian bulls with ten bulls selling to average £2352.  The Champion British Friesian went to Nerewater Quaich Physique consigned by the Bell family who farm near Wigton in Cumbria.  He was sired by Deangate Quaich and bred from their famous Phyllis cow family.  This long bodied, stylish bull sold for 2,400gns to Mr Pearson from Wigton.
