Snickerdoodle Tops October Dairy Trade

The October Border & Lakeland show and sale held at Borderway, Carlisle was once again the best place in the UK to buy exceptional milkers.  Congratulations to all the breeders who continue to breed top type animals with world class udders and powerful frames.  Buyers had a special choice with many heifers producing over 40kgs and numerous heifers bred from pedigrees with outstanding type, production and longevity.  Trade topped at 3,100gns with 26 selling for or above £2000 to average £1857 for a 100% clearance, the much anticipated Espland Youngstock sale topped at 1,250gns to average £1011.

The show was sponsored by Zoetis, Cogent and Advanced Nutrition and judged by Ali Cook from the Hurkeldale herd near Annan.  His Overall Champion and Champion Udder went to Espland Zelgadis Betsy consigned by Alan Cannon, Espland Hill, Appleby.  Betsy was sired by Zelgadis and was producing 36kgs, her grand dam was an Excellent 94 Jordan daughter with butterfat over 5%.  This amazing uddered heifer sold for 2,100gns to Messrs Paul & Son, Johnstonebridge, Dumfriesshire.

The Reserve Champion was consigned by Robert Steel from the Kepculloch herd near Glasgow.  Kepculloch Camelot Laurie was sired by Larcrest Camelot and bred from the Comestar Laurie Shiek cow family.  She was giving 37kg and sold for 2,000gns to Bridgehouse Farmimg Co, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire

The sale topper came from a special Brown Swiss heifer consigned by Matthew and Ruth Harper from the Lamroda & Lillyhall elite pedigree herds. Lillyhall Bosephus Southern Comfort was a great grand-daughter of the famous Old Mill Snickerdoodle, an eight time winner at World Dairy Expo.  Southern Comfort was due soon to Blooming sexed and sold for 3,100gns to Matt & Dan Weaver in Staffordshire.

Two heifers sold for 2,800gns, the first was for Espland Montery Sue sired by View-Home Monterey and bred from an Excellent Cedarwal Spirte dam with high butterfat and protein.  This heifer displayed huge potential and was purchased by Messrs Wilson, Barrhead, Glasgow.

The second heifer to sell for 2,800gns was the first place junior heifer in milk consigned by HS Petch & Sons from the Aytonian herd in Yorkshire.  Aytonian Glory 382 was sired by Ladys-Manor Grafeeti and bred from six generations of Excellent or Very Good cows all with impressive lifetime yields.  This perfect uddered heifer was purchased by Messrs Brewster, Thornhill, Stirlingshire.

Another stylish heifer that excelled in the show earlier in the day sold for 2,700gns.  Chishillways Uno Roma sired by Numero Uno and consigned by Paul Harrison was bred from an EX94 Colvermist Augusta third dam.  She was also bought by  Messrs Brewster, Thornhill, Stirlingshire.

The Espland young stock looked superb and topped at 1,250gns for Espland Lauthority Avril.  She was an ultra stylish heifer from a Zelgadis dam from a Shottle grand dam.
