Lulu Tops The Charts
The final Border & Lakeland sale of 2018 took place at Borderway, Carlisle in front of a packed ringside with buyers travelling from across England, Scotland and N. Ireland. The quality on offer was once again superb; buyers had an amazing choice of world class heifers all giving large volumes of milk. In total 164 animals changed hands with 28 selling for or more than £2000 with the average price coming to £1891.
The show was sponsored by Zoetis, Cogent and Advanced Nutrition and judged by Robert Butterfield from the Ingleview herd in Yorkshire. His Overall Champion went to Espland Masterful Mildred consigned by Alan Cannon from Appleby. Mildred was sired by Masterful and traced back to an Excellent 91 third dam sired by Talent. This ultra stylish udder also won Champion Udder and sold for 2,200gns to Bridgehouse Farming Company, Newton Stewart.
The Reserve Champion came from the same home as the Champion and went to Espland Uno Ada sired by the type leader Numero Uno. Her dam was an Excellent 92 Jordan with over 12000kgs. She sold for 2,200gns to W. Brewster, Wester Borland Farm, Stirling. The Espland herd sold another four heifers to average £2150.
The sale topper for the second month in succession came from the Belaw Holstein herd of Bellerby family near Northallerton, North Yorkshire. Belaw Reward Lulu was sired by Warnelview Reward and bred from an Excellent 92 Shottle dam with over 100 ton in eight lactations. She sold for 2,500gns to Hugh & Wilma Howie from Wellhouse Farm, Stranraer.
John Greenop from Bridgedale Farm, Wigton sold an impressive daughter of Walnutlawn Solomon for 2,300gns to Hugh & Wilma Howie from Wellhouse Farm, Stranraer. Meadowise Solomon Indiana was bred from an Excellent Fever with production over 11000gns an ultra fancy mammary.
Volume buyer C Innes & Sons, Nairn bought a number of top quality heifers and cows including a powerful Walnutlawn Blake daughter consigned by Newton Rigg College. Newtonrigg Blake Cinderella traced back to the Excellent 95 Quietcove Matt Cnderella and sold for 2,050gns giving 34kgs.
Winning the cow in milk class was Gerrard Lineman Daphne VG86 2yr consigned by Andrew Carter from Gerrard House Farm, Wigton. She was bred from four generations of Excellent or Very Good cows and sold for 1,950gns to C Innes & Sons, Nairn.
Other breeds included in the pedigree sale were Ayrshire, Fleckvieh and Brown Swiss heifers and topping these coloured breeds was Kedar Super Nova Crumpet consigned by Buckabank Farm, Dalston. She had one of the best udders ever seen on a Brown Swiss cow and sold for 1,900gns to the Greer family near Kinross.
Mark Day from the recently dispersed Bickleygate Holstein herd sold two well bred polled bulls and topped at 2,500gns for Bickleygate Baldus Linebacker. He was sired by Roadtrain with his fourth dam being the prolific brood cow Larcrest Crimson. This uniquely marked sire carried the lineback gene and now joins C Innes & Sons, Nairn.
Kevin Hay dispersed his Hay Holstein herd and topped at 1,900gns for Hay Autumn Gold who was bought by the Oldfield family near Gisburn. She was sired by Goldsun and bred from an outstanding line of the Ada cow family, her third dam was Durham Atlee dam of proven sire Atwood.
In-calf heifers remain excellent value for money compared to their milking contemporaries and topped at 1,500gns for Beckless Wyman M Rubie consigned by the Carlile family from Becklees Farm, Longtown. She was bred from three generations of animals classified either Excellent or Very Good and was purchased by C Innes & Sons, Nairn. This impressive group averaged £1307.
A number of bulling heifers sold and topped at 950gns for a super Roxy heifer sired by Silverridge Endure and bred from ten generations of Excellent or Very Good dams.
