GREENGRASS TOPS IT WITH A SMOOTHIE

Some of the most prolific Holstein cow families featured in the February Border & Lakeland sale.  Ashlyn, Alicia, Adeen, Missy, Licorice and Roxy all made this catalogue special, trade topped at 4,000gns for a yearling heifer with milking heifers topping at 3,000gns.  The overall average for almost 100 milkers was £1953; 44 animals sold for or more than £2000 with 43 buyers recorded from 16 counties with all the four home nations represented.  There was a noticeable drop in the value for animals of lesser quality with a larger percentage of high yielding cattle selling below £1800.

Dugdale Nutrition sponsored the show and Gary Rudd from Grassings Farm in Kirkbride judged the classes.  The Overall Champion sold for 2,500gns and was purchased by the judge.  Espland Takeoff Sasha was consigned by Alan Cannon from near Appleby and was sired by Progenesis Takeoff.  Espland sold another four heifers to average £2008.

Mr Rudd selected Nethervalley Unchained Melody as his Reserve Champion, she was consigned by Robbie Scott from Ayrshire and sold for 2,400gns to the judge.  Melody was sired by Undenied and bred from the Wesswood Rudy Missy cow family, her grand dam sold for 5,000gns in the Spotlight Sale in 2013.

The first place cow topped the cow trade at 2,800gns.  Watsonfoot Allstar Linda was consigned by Tom & Ann White from near Lanark, she was sired by De-Su Allstar and was giving 50kgs in her second lactation.  This powerful cow was purchased by Mr Mottershead from Shropshire.  The five animals from Watsonfoot averaged almost £2200.

Topping the milking trade was Dalserf Chief Clara consigned by the Ballie family from Larkhall.  This beautiful balanced heifer was sired by Stantons Chief and was bred from nine generations of Excellent or Very Good with the first three dams all Excellent.  Clara sold for 3,000gns to the Carldanton herd.  The four heifers from Dalserf averaged £2349.

The Stowbeck herd sold eight heifers to average £2100 and topped at 2,450gns for Stowbeck Secretariat Connie who was purchased by Mr Mottershead from Shropshire.  This is the second month in a row the Stowbeck consignment has been topped by a daughter of Secretariat.

A young Jersey heifer consigned by James Pratt from North Yorkshire sold for 2,500gns to the Campbell family from Callymains Farm.  Studdah Endeavour Casino Glam is potentially the seventh generation of Excellent cows, her third dam was a much-admired cow in the Potterswalls herd in N. Ireland classifying Excellent 96 points on seven occasions.

The young stock on offer in this sale were a credit to the breeders involved with all three groups attracting competitive bidding from across the UK.  Adam Mares owner of the Greengrass herd from Lancashire sold fourteen yearling and heifer calves to average almost £1700 and topped the days trading at 4,000gns for Greengrass Vickie Smoothie who was purchased by Mr McNeil from the Cairnpat Holstein herd near Stranraer.   She was sired by Legend-Maker Victor and bred from a maximum classified Fever dam followed by Misty-Springs Shottle Smoothie.

The Carldanton Holstein herd from Bolton sold 45 animals with their milking consignment averaging £2100, however their offering of yearling heifers and heifer calves was the main attraction of the day.  This classy group of heifers were bred from important cow families and all sired by highly valued sires.  Topping this group was Carldanton Integral Squaw who sold for 2,500gns to the Ingleview Holstein herd in Yorkshire.  Squaw was a high style heifer bred from a Diamondback dam, her fifth dam is sister to Richaven Raider Squaw, the Excellent 97 pointed cow regarded by many as the true type model.
