“NEREWATER HIT THE JACKPOT AT SPRING BULL SALE”

The annual Spring Dairy Bull Show & Sale held at Borderway, Carlisle on behalf of the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club had a world class line up exceptional bulls bred from the best Pedigree herds in the UK. Trade topped at 5,500gns to average £2863.  Twenty bulls sold for more than three thousand pounds with six selling for or more than five thousand.

Commenting on the sale Glyn Lucas from Harrison & Hetherington said “…the breeders must be congratulated today for consigning such high quality bulls.  Buyers had a great choice with bulls bred from many of the best cows in the UK and all with impeccable pedigrees; it is worth noting the bulls with outcross pedigrees were in high demand.”

Alistair Laird owner of the prize winning Blythbridge Holstein herd judged the show in the morning and commenting after awarding his Champions said “…I was really impressed with the standard of the bulls today.  I was looking for dairy bulls that combined strength and power and had excellent locomotion and the overall Champion excelled in all these traits”

The show was sponsored by Coomara Veterinary Practice and Advanced Nutrition with the overall Champion going to Warnelview Retake consigned by Kevin & Christine Wilson from Wood Farm, Carlisle.  He was sired by Ballycairn Supersire Corinthian and bred from Warleview Ruby Iota an Excellent 92 pointed cow with massive production.  His maternal brother was crowned Champion Bull in the same event in 2015.  The grand dam was the Former #1 PLI Cow in the breed Warnelview Goldwyn Ruby EX94.  Retake sold for 5,300gns to Greentowers Farms Lanark.  His full brother Warnelview Ramone placed second in the class and sold for 5,000gns to H Walker Barwinnock Farm, Newton Stewart.

The Reserve Champion went to Berryholme Silvan consigned by Frances and David Wright from Berryholme Farm, Kendal.  Silvan was sired by R-E-W Seaver and bred from the 2010 National Holstein Show Grand Champion Berryholme Shottle Flo EX94.  Shottle Flo has now produced over 100 ton lifetime and is a proven brood cow with many highly classified progeny.  This super stylish bull sold for 3,800gns to J W Drummond Coilsholm Farm, Ayrshire.

There was a quality entry of nine British Friesian bulls that topped at 5,500gns to average £3581 all bred from pedigrees excelling in quality and long life cattle.  Nerewater Marshall Jackpot consigned by RW & J Bell from Nerewater Farm, Kirkbride attracted a lot of interest from potential buyers.  He was a son of Lakemead Marshall with a PLI+127 and bred from an Excellent 94 pointed dam who produced over 11000kgs as a five year old.  Jackpot sold for the overall top price of the day for 5,500gns to H Limond Drumore Farm, Ayrshire.

The winning British Friesian bull in the show was Winnoch Incognito consigned by Mr Brocket from Park of Barnaigh Farm, Renfrewshire. He was sired by Dechmont Ignitor and bred from the famous Penguin cow family with many of the dams in the pedigree with massive lifetime yields.  This powerful bull sold for 5,000gns to R Neil & Sons Thorington Farm, Northumberland.

Two other bulls sold for 5,000gns.  DG Apple Pie Red was the opening lot of the day and sold in absentee.  He was consigned by AI Total and has been housed at the Cogent facilities.  He was an Olympian son and bred from MS Apples Uno Armana EX91 followed by KHW Regiment Apple Red.  He had a super genomic index PLI+£546 SCC-35 Fertility Index+14.1.  He was purchased by C Innes & Sons Drumduan Farm, Nairn.

Annandale Bach also sold for 5,000gns to Eugene Mcerlean from Macnisrston Farm, Ayr.  He was bred from a high production dam with over 13000kgs followed by a grand dam and third dam both with lactations over 14000kgs.
