HARRISON AND HETHERINGTON
DAIRY – BORDERWAY MONTHLY DAIRY DAY
WEDNESDAY 4th July 2018
The July Borderway Monthly Dairy Day was packed from start to finish with very milky cows and heifers, dry cows, in-calf heifers, bulling heifers and heifer calves. Almost 200 dairy cattle were sold topping at £2350 to average £1578 with seven animals selling for or more than £2000. It is worth noting that although milk price is rising and demand for dairy cattle is strong the dry weather conditions are a concern with grass becoming an issue on a number of farms.
Topping at £2350 was a very special heifer consigned by Matthew Gemmell from Brownfield Farm, Dumfries. She was sired by Queenscairn Romany and bred from a VG88 dam with over 12000kgs. Another heifer from the same home sold for £2150 this time sired by Meilklefirth Brook. The five heifers from this home averaged £2046.
R & A Slack, Cockley Bank Farm had a fantastic entry of 16 heifers all giving over 30kgs and all with cracking udders and powerful frames. Topping this group was a daughter of De-Su Hilliard giving 34kgs and sold for £2120.
Cows topped at £2100 for a third calver from the H&J Wilson Little Float Farm, Stranraer. She was sired by Gillette Stanleycup and was giving almost 60kgs. The Davidson family from Errolston Farm, Gretna sold a number of cows giving a massive amount of milk topping at £1900 for a third calver sired by Toc-Farm Goldfish.
There were less British Friesian cows on show but sold well topping at £1850 for a tremendous udder heifer consigned by Tony Williamson, High House Farm, Appleby.
Jersey cows and heifers sold well topping at £1500 for a third calve cow from JA Jenkinson, Fordsyke Farm, Scaleby.
Matthew Fisher from Yanwath Farm, Penrith sold two outstanding Ayrshire heifers topping at £2000 for a daughter of Burdette.
There was a fantastic entry of in-calf heifers topping at £1750 twice for two heifers both sired by Carrock Saltzberg consigned by Ian Wilson, Wood of Auldbar Farm, Angus. In total 49 in-calf heifers sold to average just over £1300.
Richard and Leanne Winder from Wall End Farm, Broughton-In-Furness sold nineteen young heifers from their prize winning dairy herd. They have combined the best of the Holstein, Montbeliarde, Swedish Red, British Friesian and Fleckvieh to bred a highly efficient herd. Their young heifer calves topped at £850 for a daughter of Rumgo (Fleckvieh) from a Holstein dam.
The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on Wednesday 18th July comprising 157 Pedigree Holsteins in the Border & Lakeland show and sale. This sale includes the dispersal of the Lismulligan British Friesian annual heifer sale and 20 bulling heifers from the Whitbarrow herd.
