Borderway Annual Autumn Suckled Calf Show and Sale

23rd September 2017

The annual autumn suckled calf show and sale at Carlisle was held on Saturday 23rd September and attracted a catalogue entry of 756 head.  This event was very kindly sponsored by Capontree Vets, David Allen (accountants), Sure Calf (Zoetis) and Border Cars.  The pre-sale judging was ably carried out by renowned showman and cattle finisher Mr W Timm of Barlow.

The overall championship rosette went to a truly outstanding Galloway cross heifer consigned by Messrs Telfer & Claxton of Newton High House, Stocksfield.  She was sired by the registered Galloway bull Glenkiln Dynamite and was out of a pure Limousin cow by Rainbow Simon.  This stylish heifer is sure to feature in the forthcoming autumn/winter shows and after spirited bidding she was sold for the days top price of £3500 to the judge Mr Timm.

Overall Champion – shown by Messrs Telfer & Claxton and sold for £3500
l/r – Rob Horn (sponsor – Sure Calf (Zoetis), Willie Timm (Judge), Pauline Graham (sponsor – Capontree),
Sarah Priestley (sponsor – David Allen) & Malcom Telfer (Vendor)

Standing in reserve position was another tremendous heifer which won the Limousin class earlier in the day.  She was brought forward by Messrs Lee of Agars Hill, Whitfield.  This classy black heifer was sired by a homebred Limousin bull who was by Goldies Oswald and was bred from a British Blue cross cow.  She sold for £2400 to Hannah Donaldson of Huby, York.

The sale featured many great runs of cattle and was deemed a flying success with many 10-12 month old bullocks selling at £1100 – £1200 per head.  Heifers also traded strongly, especially for the showy, muscled types which again regularly saw prices at £1100 upwards.

Averages – steers £1072.50 and heifers £1002.95, overall levelled at £1030.00.
