Borderway Annual Show and Sale of Ewes and Hoggs with Lambs at Foot

At Borderway Mart on Monday 13th May, Harrison & Hetherington held their annual show and sale of shearlings & hoggs with lambs at foot.

A large show of Continental shearling and hoggs with lambs at foot were forward for Mr Gerwyn Jones, Gwynedd, to cast his expert eye over. He award Overall Champion and the Harry Fisher Memorial Trophy to a tremendous pen of Beltex cross shearlings with ¾ Beltex lambs at foot consigned by Janet Bell, Fitz Farm, Aspatria, which later went on to sell for £121 per life. Taking the Reserve and 1st prize pen of hoggs was Messrs ML Fell, Harley Croft, Torpenhow, with a consignment of excellent Texel cross hoggs with Beltex cross lambs at foot, selling to the day’s top of £165 per life.

A new class for ‘Best Ewe and Lamb’ attracted a tremendous quality forward. Receiving 1st prize in this class was Messrs CP Brough, Buckabank, Dalston with his superb Beltex ewe and Beltex lamb which sold for £155. Topping the trade for this section however, was Messrs ML Fell, Harley Croft with their 3rd prize hogg, an impressive black Texel with Texel cross lamb at foot selling to £158 per life.

The large entry in to the Mule show was capably judged by Mr Richard Walton, Rockcliffe, who awarded the Overall Champion and 1st prize pen of hoggs to DR & HM Horsley Ltd, Woodhouse, Catterlen, Penrith, for the second year running, also receiving the Ernie Nixon Memorial Trophy. This great run of hoggs later sold to £98 per life.

Outwith the show, Continentals proved to be a strong trade throughout with Beltex hoggs selling to £158 from Messrs Fell, Harley Croft, and Texel cross hoggs selling to

Mules sold to a select trade, with other strong runs selling to £96 and £90 from Messrs Ridsdale, Yew Tree Farm.
