At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 3rd December, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock, which included the Christmas show and sale for all classes of cattle and sheep.
Once again a great show of 598 Cast Cows, Bulls, and Prime cattle and 1598 Prime Sheep were forward for the Christmas show at Borderway. The cattle classes were kindly judged by Mr Steven Wilson, Corby Hill Butchers and the sheep were judged by Mr Jimmy Mulholland, The Butchers Great Corby.
CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A large entry of 447 cast cows and stock bulls were forward, with a great show throughout, and included 28 show cows with trade for all classes dearer on the week.
Messrs Illingworth, Howgillside sold the top price Limousin cow for 985kg, 187.5ppk or £1846 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hartley, Pendle Valley Farm sold a pure British Blue cow for 931kg, 187.5ppk or £1745 also to Mr Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor run of outstanding Limousin cows topped at 895kg, 187.5ppk or £1678 to Owain Llyr. Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House Farm run of well fleshed cows topped at 867kg, 184.5ppk or £1601 for a Limousin cross and to 821kg, 183.5ppk or £1506 for a British Blue cross purchased by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mathers, Beech Bank sold a Limousin cross cow for 826kg, 191.5ppk or £1581 again to Mr Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Maw, Wintershields Farm, sold a British Blue cross cow for 812kg, 187.5ppk or £1522 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill sold a Limousin cross for 211.5ppk to Mr Alan Jarvis. Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm run of cows and heifers topped at 208.5ppk for a Limousin cross to Mr McGimpsey. Nilston Rigg Farm sold a Limousin cross for 206.5ppk to Mr Jarvis. Messrs Henderson & Son, Parkhouse sold a British Blue for 191.5ppk to William Barker. Ian & Dot Goldie, Greenfield sold a Charolais for 188.5ppk to Mr William Barker.
A much improved show of black and white cows were on offer with trade for all classes being 5p up on the week. Messrs Fisher, Geltside Farm sold a Swedish Red for 718kg, 145.5ppk or £1044 and to 493kg, 159.5ppk or £945 for a Montbeliarde cross both of which were purchased by Mr McGimpsey. Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm sold a Montbeliarde cross cow for 896kg, 109.5ppk or £981 to Mr George Watson. Messrs Hedworth, Townhead Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 777kg, 124.5ppk or £967 for Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill Farm sold a Montbeliarde cross cow for 869kg, 107.5ppk or £934 to Steven Bowes. Mr C Horsley, Whitrigg Grange sold a Holstein cross cow for 867kg, 105.5ppk or £914 also to Mr Bowes. Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 847kg, 107.5ppk or £910 to Mr McGimpsey. Blencogo House Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 660kg, 137.5ppk or £907 to Alan Jarvis.

PRIME BULLS – A far larger show of 107 prime bulls forward selling at a very good trade. Top overall was £1709 for a Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Simmentals sold to £1539 from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Charolais crosses sold to £1436 from Messrs Ogle, Wydon Farm, Haltwhistle. British Blue crosses sold to £1431 from Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill, Appleby purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.
Top pence per kilo of 238.5p was attained for the aforementioned British Blue cross from Messrs Rogerson. Limousins sold to 234.5p from Messrs Illingworth, Howgillside, Lockerbie and purchased by Bowland Foods. Black and whites peaked at £1185 from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers the same vendors also sold the top black & white pence per kilo of 181.5p for a different Friesian this time purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE – A very good entry of 44 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling to a large ringside of buyers, and a good trade achieved for all classes.
The Overall Champion was a tremendous red Limousin bullock from Bridgehouse Farming Co, Newton Stewart that weighted 632kg, and sold for 300ppk or £1896 and was purchased by the Judge Mr Steven Wilson. Taking the Reserve Champion ticket was a British blue heifer consigned by Messrs Dent, Elm House, Applelby which scaled 569kg and sold to 239.5ppk or £1362.76 and was purchased by Messrs Mulholland, The Butchers Great Orton.
Outwith the show, top overall was a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egremont which achieved £1631.55 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend, Coldstream received £1350.33 for a Limousin cross heifer who was purchased by Messrs Mathers, Kelso. Many more could have been sold to vendors advantage.

PRIME SHEEP – The Pre sale judging was carried out by Mr J Mulholland, of Mulhollands Butchers, Great Orton who went about his task with great skill and professionalism.
His Champion pen of 4,came from the Beltex class and were consigned by Mr T Holmes, Nutholm Farm, weighing 43kg. They later went on to sell at £200, 465.1ppk a head and were purchased by the Judge.
The Reserve Champions came for the same class being the 2nd prize pen of Beltex from Robert Garth and Sarah Priestley, Peaks View. The pen of 4 weighed 44kg and sold at £145, £329.5ppk again to the Judge.
It was the first prize single lamb from Robert Garth and Sarah Priestley that topped the sale, having previously stood second at the Agri Expo earlier in November and weighing in at 57 kg. It sold for £550, £964.9ppk again to Mr Mulholland who purchased 13 lambs in total including 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize singles as well as both the Champion and Reserve pens.
The overall average for the sale was 181.96p with an SQQ of 195.07 which equates to £82.50 a head with all classes better to sell. Export sheep of all types were met with a high demand and heavies also saw an increase in demand.
