At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 26th August, Harrison & Hetherington held their Bank Holiday sale of prime cattle and sheep.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 128 cast cows were forward due to the good weather and bank holiday.

Messrs Brough & Son, Bolton Cottage sold the top priced British Blue cross cow for 822kg, 155.5ppk or £1278. Messrs Morley, Petteril Bank Farm, sold the top priced Limousin cow for 853kg, 133.5ppk or £1138. Mr Bruce Goldie, Townfoot Fam sold the top priced Simmental cow for 840kg, 135.5ppk or £1138.  Messrs Kitching & Co, Glencartholm Farm sold a young Limousin cow for 169.5ppk. Messrs Graham, Hill End Farm selling a young Charolais cross heifer for 160.5ppk.

A mixed show of black and white cows on offer, however well fleshed cows would be sharper on the week. Messrs Carlyle, Slealands Burn sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 889kg, 125.5ppk or £1115. Messrs Baird, Red Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 839kg, 122.5ppk or £1027. Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 742kg, 132.5ppk or £983. Messrs Copeland & Son, Kilfillan sold the top priced British Friesian cow which sold for 766kg, 126.5ppk or £968. Messrs Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall sold a British Friesian cow for 733kg, 131.5ppk or £963. Messrs Nelson, Braithwaite Hall sold a British Friesian for 840kg, 113.5ppk or £953.

PRIME BULLS – A smaller entry of 48 prime bulls were forward, due to the bank holiday, however all classes were a good trade, and many more could have been easily sold.

Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Wishlaw who attained £1683.81 and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. The same vendor also sold another to £1539.67 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Simmentals sold to a top of £1303 from Messrs Cowx, Town End, Wigton and was purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. Top pence per kilo of 202.5ppk was attained for a Limousin from Messrs Gott, Prospect House, Cockermouth and was purchased by Morgan Helliwell.

Black and whites were forward in good quality, and also sold well, topping at £1100.50 from Messrs Matlock, Aulby Farm, Penrith, and to a top of 171.5ppk for another from the same home, this time purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE – A quieter day was also seen in the prime steers and heifer section, with only 36 head forward. Trade was however, sharper on the week, with the day’s top of £1591.37 for a Charolais cross steer from Messrs Crichton, Lougrigg, Egremont, and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, the same vendor also received £1590.58 for a Limousin cross steer, also purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Top pence per kilo steer was attained by Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown with a Limousin cross selling to 217.5ppk.

In the heifer section a day’s top of £1590.39 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle, and sold to Pioneer Foods. Charolais cross heifers peaked at £1571.08 from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of 237.5ppk was paid for a Limousin cross and was purchased by King Street Butchers.

Many more could have been sold, and more are required on a weekly basis.

PRIME SHEEP– The bank holiday sale, saw an entry of 2124 head forward. A plainer show of lambs overall still met a good enquiry throughout, however, lambs lacking finish were harder to cash. The sale topped at £96 for Texel lambs from Messrs Short, Kernal View, Roweltown to Morgan Helliwell. Topping per kilo at 234.5p was Messrs R & M Scott, Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead with 2 exceptional Dutch Texel lambs which sold again to Mr Morgan Helliwell. Mules sold to £83 for a pen of 9 from Messrs J Browell & Sons, Quarry House, Hexham to Michael Bowe and to 174ppk for a pen of 34 from the same good home.
