Carlisle Latter Fair of Mule Gimmer Lambs

19th September 2019

On Thursday 19th September Harrison and Hetherington held their annual ‘Latter Fair Sale’ of Mule gimmer lambs.

A catalogued entry of 5235 mule gimmer lambs were forward, which saw just short of 1000 more sheep sold on the year.  An overall average of £83.82 was achieved.

Trade for tupping lambs was flying, with 43 pens selling to £100 and above, with almost 33% of the lambs selling to above £90.

Running lambs met a firm enquiry, regularly achieving £70 per head.

The pre-sale show was kindly sponsored by Dodd & Co Accountants and Capontree Vets.  The judging was left in the capable hands of Mr William Hird, Wigton, and David Mattinson, Cockermouth with Les Yarnold, Hopesmoor, Burford acting as referee. Twelve of the finest quality lambs were presented before them, and after a great deal of deliberation they awarded the Dodd & Co Trophy, the Special NEMSA rosette and Champion rosette to the leading pen from Messrs Moore, Highside Farm, Haltwhistle, which later went on to sell to £250 per head to Messrs Geary, Milton Keynes.

Topping the trade overall at £280, was the 6th prize pen from Messrs JW Smith-Jackson, Hightown, which sold to Messrs Batty, Kendal. Messrs Smith-Jackson also attained the leading flock average of £111.20 for 1421 sold.
