The second Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale of the year had 166 dairy cattle on offer, comprising of freshly calved cows & heifers, summer calving cows, in-calf & recently bred heifers. There was a busy ringside of buyers from across the North of England and Scotland in attendance with trade topping at £2050 to average £1580. The icy and in some areas snowy road conditions had stopped some buyers from travelling however 37 buyers were on the purchases list from 7 counties.
Topping the sale at £2050 was a very milky heifer giving over 31kg consigned by the Mounsey family from Ashfield Farm, Carlisle. She was sired by Ballycairn Oman Pello and was bred from a high producing dam sired by Spooky.
Messrs Hastwell, The Bulidings Farm, Kirby Stephen sold a number of super heifers all with big wide rumps and attractive udders for £1800 or more and topped at £1950 for an Unix daughter giving 31kgs.
Also selling for £1950 was the best heifer from the consignment from Richard Livingstone from Kirtlevale, Gretna. This very milky heifer was giving 35kgs and was sired by Ards Paramount and bred from an Azure dam with over 10000kgs.
Topping the Holstein cow trade was a daughter of Aftershock consigned by Messrs Lawrie, Grangehall Farm, Lanark. She was giving 48kgs and bred from a dam who twice gave over 13000kgs, she sold for £2000.
Jonny Wilson from Little Float Farm, Stranraer sold 12 very milky cows all giving over 40kgs and topped at £1800 with a youthful second calver giving 44kgs.
There was a quality consignment of British Friesians with heifers topping at £1620 for a daughter of Winnoch Black Jack from R Neill & Sons, Thornington Farm, Northumberland.
Cross bred cows and heifers were less money today averaging £1136 for robust nice uddered animals. They topped at £1300 for a Swedish Red heifer giving 25kgs from Andrew Graves, Home Farm.
Padog Farms Ltd. from North Wales sold 26 July calving Kiwi cross bred cows from their highly efficient spring calving herd. These fertile and robust cows averaged £535 topping at £720 twice, firstly for a cow in her second lactation giving 16kgs and due in July and then for a heifer giving 14kgs.
The trade for in-calf heifers remain excellent value for money and in most cases is a buyer’s market, with heifers only a month from calving selling for around £1200. In-calf heifers topped at £1820 for an exceptional heifer sired by Toc-Farm Fitz and due shortly to Relough Generate. She was consigned by Ted & Linda Wilson from Petteril Hill Farm and bred by the Meadowise herd that was dispersed in December 2017.
