Borderway Monthly Dairy Day Sale

The December Borderway Monthly Dairy Day topped at £2400 to average £1728 for freshly calved heifers with a large number selling for or above £1800.  There was a tremendous atmosphere at ringside, buyers travelled from across UK and Ireland to see over 300 dairy cattle change hands with all breeds in high demand.

The sale featured Holsteins, British Friesian, Fleckvieh, Montbeliarde, Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, New Zealand Friesian & Jersey cattle.  The consignors once again must be congratulated on the excellent quality on offer with cows giving over 50kgs and heifers up to 40kgs on offer.

Topping at £2400 was a super framed heifer with a very fancy udder consigned by the Davidson family from Errolston Farm Gretna.  She was sired by Errolston Maui Major and was giving 38kgs.  Four other heifers from this home averaged £2050.

Richard Livingstone from Kirtlevale Farm, Gretna sold a number of heifers for over £2000 including a daughter of Grafeeti giving 30kgs who sold for £2200.

Stephen Boow from Corney Hall Farm, Millom sold four heifers topping at £2000 twice to average £1900.  First to sell for £2000 was a daughter of Gillette Caviar giving 32kgs and then a daughter of Toc-Farm Fitz giving 34kgs.

First time consignor J&D Mackie, Westerboard Farm, Glasgow sold two well bred heifers both for over £1900 and topped with a daughter of Wal-Del Bryant, giving 28kgs and bred from a Glauco dam with high butterfat and protein, she sold for £1950.

There was an excellent offering of freshly calved British Friesian cows and heifers that topped at £2000 to average £1650.  R Neill & Sons, Thornington Farm sold four heifers to average almost £1800 and topped at £2000 for a 35kgs heifer sired by Winnoch Black Jack.

There was an outstanding consignment of Fleckvieh, Swedish Red and Montbeliarde cross bred heifers from RB Farming.  They topped at £2000 for a fresh heifer giving 31kgs.

A smaller number of Ayrshire heifers were forward and they topped at £2020 for a classy uddered heifer consigned by Messer Fisher, Yanwath Farm, Penrith.

The Dispersal of the West Newton British Friesian herd on behalf of Andrew and Linda Turnbull from Rothbury, Northumberland took place following the sale of the freshly calved cows and heifers.  This was a well managed and well cared for herd.  The very best of British Friesian genetics had been used for more than half a century and it showed with the impressive type on show.

Topping this fine herd was a daughter of Raheenarran BCG Sochar selling for £2000.  She was freshly calved in her third and was giving almost 30kgs.  Another young cow that attracted some brisk bidding was a fourth calver again giving almost 30kgs and sired by Catlane Caleb.  This fine udder cow sold for £1850.

The West Newton milking heifers topped at £1850 for a daughter of Deangate Quentin, she had freshly calved in October and displayed style and class and a world class mammary.

Two spring calving herds sold a number milking cows and heifers that had moved out of their calving profile and were confirmed pregnant for July.  Cumrue Farming Partners from Lockerbie sold 52 strong framed milky animals with numerous animals selling for or more than £1000.  Lundie Farming Ltd. from Dundee sold 35 milking animals, this was the fourth year this herd had sold such a consignment and were meet with brisk bidding topping at £920 for a classy Red heifer due to the Angus in July.

In-calf heifers remain excellent value for money with another nice group of heifers selling to a top of £1300 to average £1203.  Yearling heifers also were less money on the month topping at £720 to average £645.
