RUTH FAMILY TOPS IN THE FIRST OF THE SUMMER SALES
The first Dairy sale of the summer at Borderway, Carlisle had another top-quality offering of Holstein, British Friesian, Ayrshire and Fleckvieh cattle. The sales continue under the drop and go policy implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As many of the milk markets nationally and international start to rebound after the stress caused by the closer of the food service industry demand for dairy cattle continues to grow. The current trade for dairy cattle of all categories can only be described as bullish and will continue like this for the medium term. Trade topped at £2300 with Holstein heifers averaging £1802 and rise of £200 on the month.
Topping the sale at £2300 was a pedigree heifer consigned by the Parkinson family owners of the Liscabank herd in Lancashire. Liscabank Mando Ruth was sired by Mando and bred from an Excellent 94 dam sired by Million followed by another eleven generations of dams classified in the top grades.
This was the first time the Liscabank herd sold at Borderway with another nine heifers averaging £1916 with another three selling for over £2000 including Liscabank Drake Sweet who sold for £2150.
Balcurvie Holsteins sold four heifers to average £1962 and topped at £2100 for Balcurvie Flame Primrose who was giving 31kgs
Cockley Bank Ltd sold twenty heifers to average £1746 and topped at £2050 for a heifer giving 35kgs.
British Friesian cattle were in demand with the average rising above £1500. The Williamson family from the Howes Farm near Appleby sold seven cows and heifers to average £1657 topping at £2000 for a third lactation cow.
The Davidson family from the Halmyre Ayrshire herd sold five excellent heifers all giving oceans of milk. This attractive group averaged £1776 topping at £1880 for a heifer giving 35kgs.
In-calf heifers continue to sell well with Holstein heifers averaging £1404 and topping at £1600 and Fleckvieh heifers averaged £1421 and also topped at £1600.
Holstein bulling heifers topped at £980 on several occasions to average £917 and heifer calves topped at £600 numerous times to average £557.
