Borderway Primestock Sale

30th July 2012

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 30th July, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.  Slightly improved weather conditions meant a smaller show of 300 cattle comprising 210 cows, 70 bulls and 20 prime cattle.   

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – All classes met a sharper trade with both well fleshed and plain cows showing a great improvement on the week.  Cows sold to a top of 206.5p/kg for a pure Limousin from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk bought by Mr John Little.  A superb run of five pure Limousin cows from Messrs Sowerby, Sycamore Rise sold to 199.5p/kg (twice) and averaged 194.3p/kg or £1255.51.  Stock bulls sold to £2116.53 and 175.5p/kg for a Limousin from Mr Telfer, Tarn Flatt Hall.

Prime Bulls – A very useful entry of young bulls met ather sharp trade.  Messrs RJ & E Henshall, Sarkshields, sold the top price Limousin bull selling to 219.5p/kg purchased by Cleveland Meat Co Ltd. British Blonde bulls sold to 213.5p/kg from Messrs Gibb, Jubilee Buildings, purchased by Mr Bill Howard.  Simmental Bulls sold to 209.5p/kg from Messrs Cowx, Town End purchased by Cleveland Meats Co Ltd.  British Blue cross bulls sold to 199.5p/kg from Messrs Carr, Whiteclose.  Holstein/Friesian bulls sold to 177.5p/kg and 172.5p/kg from Claremont Properties and Messrs Carr, Whiteclose respectively.

Prime Cattle – A small but quality show of prime steers and heifers met a strong demand selling to 225.5p/kg four times; twice for two superb Limousin bullocks from Messrs Dodd, West View both purchased by Pioneer Foods and again for two outstanding Limousin heifers, the first from Messrs Dinsdale, Highfield Farm purchased by Mr J Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton and the second from Messrs Hunter, The Beeches purchased by Pioneer Foods.

PRIME SHEEP

An entry of 2013 prime lambs was forward.  Topping at £108.80 was a pair of Dutch Texel cross lambs from Messrs Storey, Woodland Farm and purchased by Mr J Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton.  Topping at 241.6p/kg was a Dutch Texel cross lamb also from Messrs Storey, purchased by Andrew Dawson.  Trade followed the national trend; being easier on last weeks high rates due to an increase in numbers forward.  Well fleshed lambs were still good to sell.
