At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 19th February, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep. A smaller show of 410 Cast Cows, Bulls and Prime Cattle, and 2321 prime sheep were on offer.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 305 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with all buyers keen for cows.
Messrs Watret, Northfield Park sold the top priced Limousin cow which sold for 844kg, 178.5ppk or £1506 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Young, Crummock Bank Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow, which sold for 899kg, 162.5ppk or £1460 also to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Graham, Cumdivock Farm run of Limousin cross cows topped at 744kg, 194.5ppk or £1447 and 739kg, 191.5ppk or £1415 and were purchased by James Gracey and Ross Greenwood. Messrs Sisterson, Newlands Haugh Farm run of cows topped at 892kg, 158.5ppk or £1413 for a Charolais cross to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Little, Gap Farm sold the top priced British Blue cow which sold to 858kg, 160.5ppk or £1377 to Mr Kirkpatrick.Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold a Limousin cross heifer fro188.5ppk to Mr Fell. Messrs Willey, Broomfield Farm sold a Simmental cross heifer for 183.5ppk to Mr Ross Greenwood.
A mixed show of Black and White cows were on offer with trade for all classes being good to sell with plainer type in high demand.

Messrs Willey, Broomfield Farm run of outstanding Montbeliarde cross cows topped at 855kg, 145.5ppk or £1224and to 795kg, 145.5ppk or £1156bothr purchased by Dawn Meats. Messrs Pattinson & Son, Walby Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 950kg, 121.5ppk or £1154 to Pickstocks. Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 835kg, 136.5ppk or £1139 to Dawn Meats. Messrs Johnstone, Westray Farm sold a Montbeliarde cross cow for 776kg, 143.5ppk or £1113 again to Dawn Meats. Messrs Harries, Whitbarrow Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 817kg, 135.5ppk or £1107 also to Dawn Meats. Messrs Robinson , Pelutho Park sold a British Friesian cross heifer for 164.5ppk to Pickstocks. Mr David Harrison, Dundraw Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer to 155.5ppk and 150.5ppk to Mr Sean McGimpsey and Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold Montbeliarde cross heifers to 152.5ppk, 149.5pk to Les Fell and Sean McGimpsey.

Prime Bulls – Prime bulls were in short supply, with a smaller entry for 43 forward. More are required on a regular basis to fulfil demand.
Top overall price of £1612.65 was attained by weekly vendor Messrs Prudham, Whitefield, Brampton for a Charolais cross, others from the same home achieved £1607.40 both of which were purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Limousin bulls sold to £1578.94and to £1562.84 both from Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie.
Top pence per kilo of 228.5ppk was achieved twice, both with Limousin bulls. Firstly by Messrs Edgar, Fellside Farm, Penrith, purchased by Messrs Metcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, and secondly by Messrs Jardine, The Yett, purchased by Mr Fell.
Black and White bulls peaked at £1324.40 for a British Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. The same vendor also sold the top pence per kilo of 192.5ppk for another and was also purchased by Jewitt Meats.

Prime Cattle – A marvellous entry of 65 prime steers and heifers were forward, seeing a solid trade throughout. The ring saw new consigner to this section, Messrs Barnett, Brinns Farm, Penrith, who sold three outstanding continental cross steer achieving a top of £1772.68 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Barnett’s pen averaged £1668.33 or 241.5ppk. Their British Blue cross sold to £1670.76 and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. The same home also sold top overall pence per kilo of 253.5ppkfor a Limousin cross purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.
Heifers again easily sols, selling to a day’s top of £1483.03 from Messrs Bradley, Northrigg Hill, Brampton, and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle sold the top priced Limousin cross to £1395.24. Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth also sold a Limousin to £1339 and Messrs Brough, How Gill, Wigton to £1319.28 for a Lightweight heifer. The same vendor also achieved top pence per kilo of 233.5ppkfor another Limousin cross.
Dairy bred steers seen a day’s top of £1299.97 for a Holstein from Messrs Armistead, Pennersaughs, Lockerbie, with a top pence per kilo of 171.5ppk for another Holstein from the same home.

Prime Hoggs – The weekly sale of prime hoggs had an entry of 2135 forward which was met by a fantastic enquiry, resulting in an overall average of 216.4ppk or £96.20 and an SQQ of 222.9ppk.
Topping the sale at £121.80 was a pen of heavy Texel lambs from Messrs M Faulder, Ewan Close, Armathwaite and were purchased by Mr Robert Skelton. Messrs McCune, Farewell Grange, Threapland topped the pence per kilo at 285.6ppk for Beltex hoggs and also sold to Mr Skelton. Suffolk hoggs sold to £115.80 from Messrs Hetehrington, Blue Dial and to 224.5ppk from Messrs T Chalmers, Outer Woodhead, Canonbie.
Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hills sold Mules to £105.80 for 51kg and also topped the kilo at 217.1ppk for 34.5kg or £98.80.
