At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 19th March, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep where once again a good show of 420 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward which included shows on behalf of both North West Limousin Cattle Breeders Association and Border British Blue Club.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 245 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with extra buyers coming to take advantage of the great show of cows at Borderway.
M/s Wainwright, Todd Hall sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 891kg, 235.5p, £2098 bought by Andrew Graham. Mr Andrew Wight, Midlock sold a British Blue cow for 838kg, 239.5p, £2007 also to Andrew Graham. M/s Corrie, Stonebyres Mains sold a British Blue x cow for 946kg, 209.5p, £1981 to Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Forster, Weary Hall Style sold the top priced Limousin cow which sold for 885kg, 179.5p, £1588 to Dawn Meats. Mr Andrew Ewing, Dumbretton sold a Limousin for 206.5p to Owain Llyr. M/s Priestley, Cracrop sold a Limousin heifer for 201.5p to M/s Medcalf. M/s Norman, Little Orton sold a Limousin heifer for 199.5p bought by Alan Jarvis for M/s Worsley. M/s Harrison, Lesson Hall sold a British Blue cow for 778kg, 197.5p, £1536 to Owain Llyr. M/s McMiken, Nether Ernambrie sold a Shorthorn cow for 849kg, 168.5p, £1430 to Dawn Meats. M/s Wilson & Sons, Newbank sold the top priced Angus cow which sold for 989kg, 144.5p, £1429 to Dawn Meats. M/s Stamper & Sons, Harrot Hill sold a Limousin cow for 726kg, 193.5p, £1404 Owain Llyr.
A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer with M/s Harrington, Mounsey Bank selling two outstanding Friesian cows for 897kg, 147.5p, £1376 and 853kg, 153.5p, £1258 both purchased by Dawn Meats. M/s Armstrong, Randalinton run of Holstein cows topped at 788kg, 155.5p, £1225 also to Dawn Meats. Burthwaite Farms sold a Holstein x cow for 822kg, 145.5p, £1196 to Dawn Meats. M/s Grierson, Musgrave Hall sold a Holstein x cow for 893kg, 133.5p, £1192 also to Dawn Meats. M/s Byers, Gimmenbie sold a Montbeliarde x heifer for 181.5p to Les Fell who also bought M/s Harrison & Sons, Downhall black and white heifer which sold for 153.5p. M/s Fisher, Smalmstown run of Holstein x cows topped at 142.5p to Dawn Meats.
A small show of 7 stock bulls were on offer where M/s Wainwright, Todd Hall sold a British Blue stock bull for 1140kg, 192.5p, £2194 to Andrew Graham. M/s Metcalfe, High Old Shield sold a British Blue stock bull for 844kg, 185.5p, £1565 also to Andrew Graham.

Prime Bulls – Yet another tremendous show of 108 prime bulls whereby quality was up on the week along with trade seeing a days top of £2077.60 outwith the show for a Charolais from M/s Lawson, Halington, Newcastle purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Netherplace, Lockerbie. British Blue crosses to £1984.28 and £1968 from M/s Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle were purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Top pence per kilo of 249.5p was attained for a British Blue x from M/s Hall, Ainstable Hall and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Limousins sold to 234.5p twice, firstly from M/s Norman, Little Orton purchased by Ralph Pearson, Bradford and secondly from M/s Little, Greenhill, Wigton purchased by M/s Medcalf, Halifax.
Black and whites were seen to top at £1214.52 for a Friesian from M/s Bland, The Flatt, Brampton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and £1211.14 for another from M/s Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie and top price per kilo of 185.5p was received by M/s Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith and 183.5p for another from M/s Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie both purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor; a good day was had by all.

Prime Cattle – Outwith the show a larger entry of 69 prime steers and heifers were forward whereby all classes remaining very easy to sell with plenty of bidders, a days top was seen for Limousin crosses achieving £1770 and £1730 from M/s Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Blondes sold to £1746.83 and British Blues peaked at £1742.83 again both lots from M/s Anderson, Crosby House and purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top price per kilo of 238p was again achieved by M/s Anderson and this time purchased by M/s Hall of Frasers Butchers, Stranraer.
Heifers seen an overall top of £1657.54 for a Limousin cross from M/s Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle and purchased by M/s Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle. Charolais were to £1550.83 from M/s Wood, Waters Farm, Penrith and purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo of 239.5p was attained by M/s Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle for a Limousin cross and was purchased by M/s Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton.

Prime Hoggs – On Monday 19th March Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep. An overall average of 257.1ppk, SQQ 261.4ppk, was achieved with all classes a phenomenal trade, beyond anybody’s expectations; the sale average per head being £112.58. The sale topped at £136.80 for a fabulous pen of 6 Beltex hoggs from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston which sold to Mr A Dawson; Messrs Musgraves run of Beltex hoggs averaged £132.80 (308.84ppk).
Messrs Fisher, Smalstown topped the sale per kilo at 328.4ppk, again for a pen of Beltex hoggs which again sold to Mr A Dawson; Messrs Fishers run of 544 hoggs, half continental x, half blackfaced averaged £123.05 per head, with a pen of 22 blackfaced hoggs selling to £126.30 and suffolks to £136.30 both topping their breed sections.
Mules topped at £129 a head for a pen from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hills and to 261.4ppk from Messrs Bendle, The Nook.
