Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 344 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with over 24 buyers ensuring a good trade throughout.
M/s Boocock & Son, St Lois Farm sold the top priced British Blue cow which sold for 896kg, 236.5p, £2119 to Owain Llyr. M/s Coates, Rainscar sold a Blue cow for 682kg, 226.5p, £1544 to Owain Llyr.
M/s Boocock & Sons also sold a Blue cow for 764kg, 222.5p, £1699 to Owain Llyr. Redpath Farms run of cows topped at 912kg, 169.5p, £1545 to Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Bell, Fitz Farm sold a Limousin cow for 805kg, 188.5p, £1517 to Owain Llyr. M/s Watson & Co, Bowsden Moor run of cows topped at 862kg, 175.5p, £1512 to Sean McGimpsey. M/s Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold a Limousin cow for 778kg, 193.5p, £1505 and also a Blue x cow for 776kg, 193.5p, £1501 both to Owain Llyr. M/s Harryman, Keskadale run of cows topped at 777kg, 193.5p, £1503 for a Limousin bought by Owain Llyr with another Limousin cow selling for 203.5p to Sean McGimpsey. Mr Hall, Ainstable Hall run of cows topped at 665kg, 220.5p, 31466 for a Blue x to Sean McGimpsey. M/s Edgar, Castle Nook sold a Limousin x heifer for 668kg, 214.5p, £1432 to Sean McGimpsey.
A good show of black and white cows were on offer with a good trade for all classes. M/s Paul & Son, Greigsland sold a Holstein x heifer for 793kg, 149.5p, £1185. M/s Willey, Broomfield Farm run of Montbeliarde cows topped at 842kg, 138.5p, £1166 and 803kg, 142.5p, £1144 both to Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Robinson, Burtholme Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 899kg, 129.5p, £1164 to Sean McGimpsey. M/s Todhunter, & Sons Lonning Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 842kg, 135.5p, £1140 to Dawn Meats. Prime Bulls – Yet another large entry of 106 prime bulls forward achieving the same good trade as last week seeing a day’s top of £1896 & £1800 for Limousins from M/s Logan, Humebyres, Kelso, purchased by Ralph Pearson. British Blues sold to a top of £1797.75 from M/s Hall, Ainstable Hall who’s run of bulls averaged £1745.43. Charolais to £1557.89 from M/s Wight, Carwood, Biggar. Aberdeen Angus to £1501.33 from M/s Steel, Lesson Hall, Wigton. Top pence per kilo of 233.5p was attained by M/s Wetherall, Low Buildings, Carlisle for a Limousin purchased by M/s Medcalf, Halifax and 227.5p for a British Blue from M/s Hall, Ainstable Hall.
In the black and whites a day’s top of £1366.75 was attained by M/s Clark, Whins, Lockerbie and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and top pence per kilo of 186.5p was received by M/s Reed, Croft House, Carlisle purchased again by Jewitt Meats.

Prime Cattle – Good numbers forward in the prime steer and heifers with 56 presented to a full ringside of buyers, seeing a top of £1755 for a British Blue heifer from Messrs Boocock, St Lois Farm, York purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Preston, Ainstable Hall sold another to £1566 purchased by Les Fell and a Limousin from the same home sold to £1552 purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of 246.5p for a British Blue cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.
In the steers a top price of £1654 was achieved by Messrs Smithston, Bloan, Kirkby Stephen for a Limousin and £1637 for another from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle. British Blues sold to £1639 again from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm all purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo steer was 231.5p and once again was sold out a marvellous run of 12 from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm.

Prime Hoggs – On Monday 26th March Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of 3064 prime sheep and 174 cast sheep. A fantastic show of prime hoggs met with keen demand once again in Borderway with vendors travelling from as far afield as Cheshire and Yorkshire and with all vendors being delighted with their returns.
An overall average of 247.1p was achieved which equates to £107.87 per head; this despite a greater portion of light hoggs in the market.
Messrs Bell, Harewalls, Hexham topped the market at £140.80 for heavy Texel hoggs which sold to Mr Michael Bowe, CR & CL Donaldson, Hazel House, York topped the market with pence per kilo with a pen of great export weight Texels selling at 325.1ppk to Mr Andrew Dawson.
Suffolk hoggs sold to a top of £137.30 for a pen of 23 shown by Messrs Irving, East Cliff, Kirklinton, whos run averaged £132.79 per head.
Hill bred hoggs sold to £124.30 for a pen of Cheviots from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown and to 262.8ppk for a pen of 36 Cheviots from Messrs Wilson, Woodside, Wreay.
