Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 16th April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep. A smaller show of 420 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward, with 1777 prime hoggs and spring lambs.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 310 cast cows and stock bulls were forward, with over 20 buyers from all parts of the UK coming to buy cows at Carlisle, which resulted in a trade you have to see to believe.

Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall sold two outstanding British Blue cows for 915kg, 244.5ppk or £2237 and 945kg, 227.5ppk or £2149 purchased by Mr Sean McGimpsey, and Mr Andrew Graham. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe run of pure Limousin cows topped at 848kg, 177.5ppk or £1505, purchased by Messrs Worsley, and to 788kg, 183.5ppk or £1445 and 691kg, 196.5ppk or £1357 purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Hill, Whitewall Farm sold a Limousin cow for 755kg, 192.5ppk or £1453 to Messrs Worsley. Messrs Gibb, Jubilee sold two pure Blonde cows which sold for 908kg, 158.5ppk or £1439 and to 841kg, 167.5ppk or £1408 purchased by Dawn Meats and Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Trafford, Peter House Farm sold a Blonde cross cow for 841kgm 168.5ppk or £1417to Owain Llyr. Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House Farm run of cows topped at 755kg, 181.5ppk or £1370 for a British Blue cross cow purchased by Sean McGimpsey.

A good run of black and white cows were on offer, with Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow run of cows topping at 792kg, 147.5ppk or £1168 and to 773kg, 146.5ppk or £1132 both purchased by Dawn Meats, and to 817kg, 136.5ppk  to Sean McGimpsey. Bays Leap Dairy Farm, run of well finished cows topped at 852kg, 135.5ppk or £1154 to Dawn Meats. Messrs Robinson & Son, Gelt Hall Farm run of British Friesians topped at 812kg, 137.5ppk or £1116 also to Dawn Meats. Messrs Naylor, Hill Green run of cows topped at 766kg, 144.5ppk or £1106 to Mr McGimpsey. Messrs Martin, Boggle Hall sold a British Friesian heifer for 150.5ppk. Messrs Fearon, Low Row run of Holstein cross heifers topped at 149.5ppk. Messrs Halliday, Broathill sold a Holstein cross heifers for 146.5ppk. Bowe Dairy Farming sold a Holstein cross heifer for 146.5ppk. Messrs Moffat & Co, Kirtlebank Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 145.5ppk and finally Messrs Wainwright & Son, Castle Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 145.5ppk.

A larger show of 12 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Moffat, Stone House selling the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1080kg, 160.5ppk or £1733 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.

Prime Bulls – A smaller entry of 71 prime bulls were forward selling to the usual good trade for all shapes and sizes. Top overall of the day was £1773.55 for an Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow, Lockerbie, and to £1640.90 for another from Messrs Armour, Milton, Moffat. British Blues peaked at £1566.41from Messrs Dinning, Watch Currock, Hexham. Top price per kilo of 214.5ppk was attained by Messrs Young, Crummock Bank, Wigton for a Limousin cross.

Black and whites sold to £1391.47 from Messrs Marrs, Broomhills, Carlisle for a Holstein Friesian with a top pence per kilo of 200.5ppk for the same bull.

Prime Cattle – A smaller entry of 39 prime steers and heifer were forward selling to a very good trade. Receiving the top price was Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle attaining £1711.55 for a British Blue cross purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top priced Limousin cross was consigned by Messrs Sisson, Fenton, Brampton receiving £1652.49 and to £1611.20 from Messrs Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport, both of which purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top overallpence per kilo of 237.5ppk was paid to Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby for a Limousin cross.

Heifers sold to a days top of £1437.27 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House and a top overall pence per kilo of 228.5ppk for the same good heifer.

Prime Hoggs – A much plainer show of sheep were harder to cash on the week, however best sorts were still 260-280ppk. The sale topped at £138.80 for a pen of Texel cross hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown. Top pence per kilo was 301.9ppk for Dutch Texel hoggs from Messrs Story, Woodhead.
