At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 23rd April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep. Whereby a larger entry of 407 cast cows, bull and prime cattle were forward, as well as 1383 prime sheep.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A larger show of 311 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to a larger ring side of buyers which ensured that all classes were dearer on the week. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold a British Blue cross cows for 796kg, 208.5ppk or £1659 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Phillipson, Glebe Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 842kg, 178.5ppk or £1502 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ridley, Wood Hall run of outstanding cows topped at 772kg, 193.5ppk or £1493 for a Limousin cross cow also purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mews, Chapel House sold the top priced Charolais cow which sold for 759kg, 189.5ppk or £1438 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Robinson, Maison Gill sold the top priced Blonde cow which sold for 752kg, 752kg, or 186.5ppk or £1402 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot sold the top priced Simmental cow which sold for 888kg, 157.5ppk or £1398 to Messrs Worsley. Kilnstown Farm sold a Limousin cross heifer for 198.5ppk.

A good show of black and white cows were on offer with all classes being sharper on the week. Messrs Smithston, Skelcies Hall sold an outstanding Holstein cross which sold for 1015kg, 139.5ppk or £1415 and to 862kg, 139.5ppk or £1202 both purchased by Dawn Meats. Messrs Marrs & Sons, Croft Farm sold the top priced British Friesian which sold for 819kg, 146.5ppk or £1199 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm sold to over age Holstein cross Blues for 833kg, 143.5ppk or £1195 and to 761kg, 154.5ppk or £1175 and was purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrik and Mr Les Fell. Messrs Irving, Meinbank Farm sold a Holstein cross for 878kg, 134.5ppk or £1180 to Dawn Meats. Messrs Jefferson, High Pow sold an Ayrshire heifer for 158.5ppk. Messrs Nanson & Son, Sorrow sold a Holstien cross heifer for 155.5ppk. Messrs Little & Sons, Kirkbride House sold a Swedish Red & White heifer for 154.5ppk. Messrs Brown, Lane End Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 153.5ppk.

A smaller show of 8 stock bulls were on offer, with Messrs Annett & Son, Widdrington Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 985kg, 168.5ppk or £1659 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close sold a Limousin stock bull for 899kg, 171.5pp or £1541 or Owain Llyr. Messrs Graves, Old Town Farm sold a Holstein cross bull for 1309kg, 120.5ppk or £1577 to Mr Kirpatrick.

Prime Bulls – A smaller show of 47 prime bulls were forward resulting in a very good trade for all classes. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Horn, Lower Griseburn, Appleby who received £1973.63 and was purchased  by Messrs Frasers Butchers, High Street, Stranraer. Messrs Arnett, Widdrington Farm, Morpeth sold three bulls to a top of £1948.66 and to average £1841.34 and were all purchased by Mr Ralph Pearson. British Blue crosses sold to £1489.72 from Messrs Prudham, Whitfield Brampton  and were purchased by Messrs Jewitt, Spennymoor. Top pence per kilo of 237.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Horn for the aforementioned Limousin.

Black and whites achieved a day’s top of £1432.34 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Marrs, Broomhills, Carlisle, and top pence per kilo of 205.5ppk for the same good bull.

Prime Cattle – A good show of 49 prime steer and heifers were forward, resulting in a very good trade for all classes. Top overall of £1737.45 was achieved by Messrs Chrichton, Loughrigg, Egremont for a Limousin cross steer purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle sold the top British Blue cross to £1604.23 again purchased by Pioneer Foods. Overall pence per kilo steer was 237.5ppk for a Blonde from Messrs Bradley, Northrigg Hill, Brampton and was purchased by Fraser Butchers, Stranraer. Limousin topped at 233.5ppk from by Messrs Nicholson, The Gill.

Heifers were seen to top at £1521.98 from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan and purchased by Fraser Butchers, Stranraer. Blondes sold to £1426.46 from Messrs Bradley, Northrigg Hill, Brampton and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo as a smart Limousin heifer from Messrs Wilson, Low Farm, Penrith who attained 235.5ppk and was purchased by Messrs Metcalf, Halifax.

More cattle could have been easily sold, are required on a weekly basis.

Prime Sheep– The weekly sale of spring lambs met an increase in demand, selling to a top of £139.80 for a pair of Charolais crosses consigned by Messrs SH Pickthall, Swallow Heights, Workington selling to John Scott Meat, Paisley, these were also top pence per kilo at 297.4ppk.

Hoggs saw a very mixed show of end of season types, and topped at £122.80 for three Dutch Texels from Messrs Story, Woodhead, Haltwhistle, which were also top pence per kilo at 279.1ppk and were purchased by Mr R Skelton. Better types were sharper on the week, best demonstrating this was a run of twenty six Cheviot hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, selling to £121.30 or 266.6ppk to Mr Mike Lomax.

A plainer show of ewes sold to a top of £125.50 for Texels from Messrs Huddleston, Round Meadows, Hexham.
