Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 449 cast cows, bull and prime cattle were forward on Monday.
Once again a larger show of 312 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to the usual large ring side of buyers which resulted in all classes bringing a very good trade.
A large show of 12 stock bulls were forward to a great demand. Messrs Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge sold an outstanding British Blue stock bull which sold for 1170kg, 208.5ppk or £2439 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Irving & so, Burnside sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1280kg, 158.5ppk or £2028 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall sold two British Blue stock bulls which topped at £1020kg, 177.5ppk or £1810 to Mr Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Gibb, Jubilee Buildings sold the top priced Blonde cow which sold for 921kg, 185.5ppk or £1708 to Mr Andrew Graham. Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm, sold a Limousin cow for 860kg, 189.5ppk or £1629 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mathers, Beech Bank, sold the top priced British Blue cross cow which sold for 719kg, 220.5ppk or £1585 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Lawson & Son, South Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow which sold for 960kg, £1550 to Dawn Meats. Messrs Bradley & Son, Marina House sold two Parthenais cow for 717kg, 192.5ppk or £1380 and to 684kg, 201.5ppk or £1378 both purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Case & Son, Dendron Farm run of cows topped at 220.5ppk for a Limousin cross cow purchased by Messrs Worsley. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm sold two young cows for 200.5ppk purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick and to 195.5ppk to Jewitt Meat Ltd.
A mixed show of black and white cows were forward with all classes being in great demand. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm run of cows topped at 888kg, 142.5ppk or £1265 and 845kg, 131.5ppk or £1111 and was purchased by Dawn Meats and Les Fell. Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold a Holstein cross cow for 822kg, 144.5ppk or £1187 to Dawn Meats. Messrs Bowker, Riggheads sold a Holstein cross heifer for 817kg, 144.5ppk or £1180 to Dawn Meats. Messrs Fleming, Hillhead sold a Holstein cross cow for 847kg, 137.5ppk or £1164 to Scot Beef. Messrs Pollock, Towngate sold a Holstein cross for 791kg, 141.5ppk or £1119 to Dawn Meats. Messrs Weightman, Highwood Nook sold a Holstein cross cow for 814kg, 126.5ppk or £1111 also to Dawn Meats. Messrs Moscrop, Ryeclose sold a British Friesian cow for 144.5ppk.

Prime Bulls – A much larger entry of 94 prime bulls forward selling very dear once again with a day’s overall top of £1970 for a British Blue from Messrs Oxley, Barholm Mains, Newton Stewart purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Another British Blue sold to £1901 from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall purchased by Messrs Kirkpartick. Limousins to £1816 from Messrs Harryman, Keskadale, Keswick purchased by Ralph Pearson. Simmentals sold to £1611 from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick. Charolais to £1417 for Messrs Gracie, Byre Burnside, Canonbie.
Top overall pence per kilo of 251.5p was achieved by Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall and purchased again by Ralph Pearson and 249.5p for a Limousin from Messrs Harryman, Keskadale Farm.
Black and Whites sold to an overall top of £1278 for Messrs Workman, The Beeches, Carlisle and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and 199.5p from the same home for another. More could have been sold to vendors’ advantage.

British Blues to £1608 from Messrs M & GA Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Top overall pence per kilo of 233.5p was achieved by Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle for a Limousin cross, British Blues to 229.5p for the aforementioned steer from The Lake Farm.
Heifers were seen to top at £1492 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle and purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick. Simmentals to £1303 from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton and purchased by Messrs Fell, Settle. Top overall pence per kilo was another British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall achieving 245.5p also purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick.

Prime Sheep– A nice quality entry of spring lambs met a flying trade to a top of £160 a head for Charolais cross lambs consigned by Messrs Noble, Mill Farm, Beckermet which sold to Mr Geoff Nutter.
Prices per kilo reached 345p for a cracking Texel cross lamb from Mr CP Brough, Buckabank, Dalston which also sold to Mr Geoff Nutter.
Hoggs met a great demand to average 265.62p (SQQ 268.83p) £116.91 per head. Mr CP Brough, Buckabank consigned the top priced hoggs at £156.80 for a pair of heavy Texels which sold to Mr Micheal Lomax. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown topped per kilo at 305.7p for a pen of 10 Beltex which sold to Mr Robert Skelton.
Smalmstown sold a great run of 436 mainly hill bred hoggs to average £128.08 a head to a top of £146.80 for heavy Suffolks
