Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Bank Holiday Monday 14th May, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A larger show of 532 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward this week.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 396 cast cows and cast bulls were presented to once again a busy ringside at Carlisle this week. Top overall price was achieved by M/s RE Miller, West Farm, Apastria with a tremendous Limousin cow gaining £1696 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket Newmarket also had a superb Limousin cow reaching £1640 purchased by Alan Jarvis on behalf of a client. Blondes topped at £1578 from M/s Bradley, Northrigg Hill, Brampton purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Top overall pence per kilo of 217.5p came from M/s Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle with a Limousin cow. M/s Bradley, Northrigg Hill achieved 214.5ppk for the aforementioned Blonde cow.

M/s Wilson, Wood Farm, Thursby brought forward a tremendous Holstein Friesian cow which sold for 136p, 931kg, £1270 purchased by Scotbeef Ltd, Inverurie. M/s Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown run of cows topped at £1230 purchased by Dawn Meats. Other Holstein x cows achieved £1212 from M/s Gardhouse, Aikton House. Top pence per kilo came from M/s Steel, The Laurels Farm for a Holstein Friesian receiving 152.5ppk. M/s Moore, Brayshaw had a Swedish Red & White gain 151.5ppk.

Cast Bulls topped at £1527 for an Aberdeen Angus consigned by West Farm Farming purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. M/s Musgrave, Hill Farm, Blackford had a Limousin achieve £1423 also purchased by Kirkpatrick. Holstein Friesians topped at £1229 from The Laurels, purchased by Alan Jarvis on behalf of Pickstocks Ltd. Top pence per kilo was achieved from M/s Ridley, Piper Dean for a Charolais cast bull receiving 170.5ppk & 167.5ppk both purchased by Les Fell.

Prime Bulls – Once a very good entry of 93 prime bulls forward selling as good as last week except best quality sorts would be far dearer. Top overall was a Limousin from M/s Logan, Humebyres, Kelso receiving £1997 and purchased by M/s Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. British Blues to £1861 from M/s Forrester, Down By Rigg, Carlisle purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Charolais to £1763.19 from M/s Prudham, Whitefield, Brampton. Aberdeen Angus crosses to £1494.95 from M/s Armour, Milton Moffat purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

Top overall pence per kilo of 243.5p was achieved by M/s Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle and 241.5p from M/s Taylor and Gill, Fell End, Cockermouth for another both purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers.

Black and whites to £1378.53 for a Friesian from M/s Hewitson, Kings Hill, Brampton and purchased by M/s Kirkpatrick and Holstein Friesians to £1295.48 from M/s Wilson, Old Church, Brampton. Top pence per kilo of 196.5 from M/s Jefferson, Aspatria hall, Wigton and the same price attained by M/s Workman, The Beeches, Carlisle.

Prime Cattle – A larger entry of 56 prime steers and heifers forward selling to a slight increase in trade on the week. Top overall was a Charolais steer from M/s Hird, Wiza Farm, Wigton achieving £1698 and £1660 purchased by M/s Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Limousin’s sold to £1685.78 from M/s Nicholson, Gill Farm, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues from the same home peaked at £1665.79 again purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 231.5p was received by M/s Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport and M/s Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport to 230.5p. Black and white steers to £1349.81 or 160.5ppk from M/s Robinson, Gelt Hall Farm, Brampton.

Heifers were seen to peak at £1546.02 from M/s Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith purchased by Alan Jarvis. British Blues to £1452.45 from M/s Westgarth, Setterah Park, Penrith and purchased by M/s Fell, Settle. Top overall pence per kilo of 239.5p was paid to M/s Norman, Little Orton Farm, Carlisle by Medcalfe, Brookwood Abattoir

Prime Sheep– The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep consisted of 1603 hoggs, 70 spring lambs and 170 cast sheep which is well over double last year’s entry.

Spring lambs met a fabulous enquiry and took a big jump on the week to average 308.7ppk for all weights and types. Messrs JD Hetherington & Son sold a fabulous run of lambs and topped the sale at £156.80 for a single Suffolk cross which sold to Mr A Dawson. The run from Blue Dial averaged a staggering £152.80 per head. Messrs Donaldson, East Park made a return with spring lambs and topped per kilo selling a pen of 8 Texel crosses at 339.5p to Mr A Dawson. The spring lamb section averaged £132.69 per head.

Hoggs met a good demand once more with meated types regularly 265-290ppk, however, plainer store types proved harder to cash. Topping the sale at £143.80 was a pen of 12 fantastic Beltex hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown which sold to Mr Robert Skelton. The pen also topped per kilo at 290.5p. Despite many store type and end of season runs the hoggs still averaged a great £107.67 per head. Ewes were sharper and sold to a top of £129.50 for a pair of ewes from Messrs Richardson, Heggle Lane with the sale average £87.66 per head.
