Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle Monday 21st May, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A smaller show of 414 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 1500 prime and cast sheep were forward this week.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A great show of 12 stock bulls sold and topped at 1121kg, 192.5p, £2157 for a Limousin stock bull from M/s Henderson, East Bowhill Farm bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s DA Harrison, Hill House sold 3 outstanding British Blue stock bulls which topped at 1058kg, 200.5p, £2121 and 1078kg, 189.5p, £2042 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Johnston, Orton Hall sold a Limousin stock bull for 1038kg, 192.5p, £1998 to Andrew Graham

A good show of beef cows were on offer with an average of 152.7p which would be 3-5p up on the week. M/s DA Harrison, Hill House Farm run of well finished cows topped at 674kg, 225.5p, £1519 for a British Blue cow and 769kg, 191.5p, £1475 for a Limousin cow purchased by Andrew Graham. M/s Houston, Gretna House sold the top priced Charolais cow for 956kg, 174.5p, £1668 also to Andrew Graham. M/s Westgarth, Setterah Park sold the top priced Limousin x cow which selling for 830kg, 177.5p, £1473 to Dawn Meats. M/s Little, Greenhill, Farm Wigton sold a Limousin cow for 741kg, 186.5p, £1381 bought by Andrew Graham.

A mixed show of black and white cows on offer with all the cows averaging 120.7p which again would be 7p up on the week. M/s Crowther, West Trailtrow run of Holstein x cows topped at 808kg, 155.5p, £1256 and 778kg, 144.5p, £1124 and also 816kg, 135.5p, £1105 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick, Dunbia, and Scotbeef. M/s Brown, New Mill Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 880kg, 138.5p, £1218 to Dunbia. M/s Harris, Whitbarrow Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 829kg, 144.5p, £1197 to Dunbia, M/s Irving, Becton Hall run of Holstein x cows topped at 849kg, 139.5p, £1184 to Dunbia. M/s Wise, Low Tarns sold a Holstein x cow for 772kg, 143.5p, £1107 to Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Bowker, Riggheads sold a Holstein x heifer for 162.5p. M/s Haston & Son, Swordwellrigg sold a Montbeliarde x heifer for 161.5p.

Prime Bulls – Another good offering of 84 prime bulls were forward resulting in a very good trade for all types sold. Top overall was a Limousin from M/s Goldie, Townfoot Farm, Dumfries achieving £1785.09 and purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Top overall pence per kilo of 244.5p was attained pence per kilo of 244.5p by M/s Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan again purchased by Ralph Pearson.

Black and whites sold to £1239.84 from M/s Dickinson, High House, Wigton and purchased by Jewitt Meat, Spennymoor and £1224.91 from M/s Bland, The Flatt, Brampton purchased by the same company. M/s Dickinson, also sold top pence per kilo of 188.5p and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Prime Cattle – An excellent entry of 57 prime steers and heifers forward, resulting in a great trade shown throughout. Top overall came from a pen of ten consigned by M/s JC&D Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle achieving £1745.03 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top British Blues to £1689.12 again from M/s Nicholson, The Gill and Charolais crosses sold to £1474.41 from M/s McClellan, Stainburn House, Workington. Top pence per kilo of 231.5p was also received by M/s Nicholson for a Limousin cross.

Heifers seen an overall top of £1448.75 for a Charolais from M/s Goldie, South Bowerhouse and purchased by M/s Craig, The Butcher. The same vendor sold another to £1400.18 and purchased by M/s Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie top overall pence per kilo of 237.5p was for the aforementioned Charolais heifer from M/s Goldie.

Prime Sheep– The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep consisted of 1181 hoggs, 217 spring lambs and 260 cast sheep.  Spring lambs were forward in greater numbers with all classes good to sell, 43-53kg lambs were in short supply and met a premium.  Topping the sale was a superb Texel cross lambs consigned by Messrs J Marshall, Hermitage, Lockerbie which sold at £155.80 to RJ Harrison & Son, Butchers, 24 King Street,  Wigton.   Top price per kilo at 317p was a great Texel lamb shown by Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft, Wigton which sold to Mr R Skelton, Dearham.  Meated hoggs remained good to sell, leaner sorts are now proving harder to cash.  The hoggs peaked at £123.80 for Texels from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths which sold to Mr M Lomax.  Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown topped per kilo at 273.3p for Beltex which sold to Mr R Skelton.  Ewes were sharper on the week to £117.50 for Suffolk ewes from Messrs Atkinson, The Gill.
