At Borderway Mart, Carlisle Monday 4th June, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A great show of 601 cast cows, bull and prime cattle as well as a smaller show of prime sheep were presented to a large ring side of buyers.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A great show of 405 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with all vendors leaving highly delighted.
Mr Neil Barclay, South Road, Aberdeen sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 863kg, 225.5ppk or £1946 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall run of Limousin cows topped at 779kg, 209.5ppk and purchased for Messrs Worsley. Mr Alasdair Houston, Gretna House run of Charolais cows topped at 850kg, 177.5ppk or £1508 and was purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Phillipson, Glebe Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 804kg, 175.5ppk or £1411 and was purchased by Messrs Worsley. Messrs Bell Haas Grove sold two great cows which topped at 716kg, 194.5ppk or £1392 to Owain Llyr.
A great show of black and white bulls were in great demand with a top price of 887kg, 142.5ppk or £1263 and to 833kg, 136.5ppk or £1137 both purchased by Dunbia. Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm sold a Holstein cross to 771kg, 149.5ppk or £1152 and to 824kg, 138.5ppk or £1141 purchased by Mr Les Fell and Dunbia, who also bought Messrs Brough & Son, Bolton Cottage’s Holstein cross cow which sold for 808kg, 142.5ppk or £1151.
Messrs Halliday, Broathill sold a Holstein cross for 852kg, 136.5ppk or £1126. Messrs Edgar & Co, Whitecroft Mains sold a Holstein cross cow for 836kg, 134.5ppk or £1124. Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall sold a Holstein cross for 796kg, 140.4ppk or £1118. Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 777kg, 142.5ppk or £1107. All of the above were purchased by Dunbia. Messrs Neill & sons, Thornington Farm sold a British Friesian cow for 161.5ppk and was purchased by Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Williamson, the Howes also sold a British Friesian cow for 159.5ppk or 154.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Sean McGimpsey and Les Fell. Messrs Young, Crummock Bank sold a Holstein cross heifer for 155.5ppk to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 152.5ppk and was purchased by Pickstocks.

Messrs Wharton & Son, Snade Farm sold a British Blue stock bull for 993kg, 174.5ppk or £1732 to Sean McGimpsey. Claremont Properties sold the top priced Limousin stock bull which sold for 1134kg, 137.5ppk or £1559 to Pickstocks.

British Blue crosses sold to £1626 from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk and Parthenais to £1517 from Messrs Bradley, Marina House. Top Overall pen per kilo of 229.5p was achieved by Millantae Farms and 228.5p received twice by Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm. Prime Cattle – Another superb show of 50 prime steers and heifers forward with trade topping at £1697.43 for a Limousin cross steer from M/s Studholme, Nealhouse this went on to be purchased by Pioneer Foods. M/s Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton also sold an exceptional steer at £1695.44. British Blues topped at £1655.40 from M/s Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo was 237.5p for a Limousin steer which was again received by M/s Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle. Heifers peaked at £1441.63 for a British Blue cross from M/s Hall, Ainstable Hall and went on to be purchased by Alan Jarvis, with the top pence per kilo of 244.5p was again received by M/s Hall for a Limousin this time was purchased by Bowland Foods. Many more could of been sold to vendors advantage.

Prime Sheep – The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep sold much sharper on the week. Prime lambs averaged 270ppk and sold to a top of £147.80 for an outstanding Suffolk cross lambs from Messrs Norman, Low Moorhouse Farm which sold to Mr Robert Skelton. Messrs Martin, Boggle Hall sold a fabulous Texel cross lamb to £143.80 again purchased by Mr Skelton.
Top pence per kilo was achieved for a consignment of shapely Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs Johnston, Springfield which sold to 311.7ppk and also purchased by Mr Skelton.
Hoggs sold to £124.80 for Texels from Messrs Murray, Branch End and were purchased by Mr M Lomax and to 228.2ppk for Texels from Messrs Horn, Field House.
