At Borderway Mart, Carlisle Monday 18th June, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A large show of 552 cast cows, bull and prime cattle were forward.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 402 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with a great ringside of buyers which ensured a good trade for all classes.
Messrs Neill & Partners, Upper Nisbet sold the top priced Limousin cow for 791kg at 185.5p totalling £1467 to Dunbia. Messrs Hewetson, Lord Close sold a Limousin cross cow for 805kg at 177.5p totalling £1428 bought for Messrs Worsley. Messrs Skelton & Son, Low House sold a Limousin cross heifer for 704kg at 199.5p totalling £1404 bought for Messrs Worsley. Messrs Foster, West Farm sold some Limousin cross heifers for 207.5p and 204.5p both purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs Cowx & Son, Hudscales sold a Limousin heifer for 206.5p also to Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs Walton, Penpeugh sold the top priced British Blue cross cow for 754kg at 171.5p totalling £1293 to Steve Bowes. Messrs Wright & Sons, Midlock Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow for 786kg at 162.5p totalling £1277 to Steve Bowes.
A large show of Black and White cows on offer with all classes selling well above vendors expectations. Messrs Cannon, Espland Hill sold the top prices Holstein cross heifer for 802kg at 155.5p totalling £1247 bought by Alan Jarvis. Messrs Hunter & Son, Upmanby sold a Holstein x cow for 832kg at 142.5p totalling £1185 also to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall sold a Holstein x cow for 709kg at 161.5p totalling £1154 to George Watson. Mr David Graham, South Lambhill sold a Holstein cross cow for 772kg at 147.5p totalling £1138 to Messrs Kirkpatick. Messrs Hunter, Berrier Head sold a Holstein cross heifer for 171.5ppk. Messrs Harres, Whitbarrow Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 163.5ppk.
A large show of stock bulls on offer with Messrs Foster, West Farm selling the top priced Charolais bull for 1109kg at 127.5p totalling £1413 to Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs Todhunter & Sons, Lonning Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1042kg at 129.5p totalling £1349 to Messrs Kirkpatrick.

Prime Cattle – A poorer show of 50 prime steers and heifers forward which looked less money on the week but actually saw a good trade for the quality on offer. Top overall was paid to Messrs Studholme, Nealhouses Farm, Carlisle for a British Blue cross receiving £1688 and purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top Charolais crosses sold to £1658 from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie and £1616 for a Limousin cross from the same home. Top price per kilo was 228.5p for a British Blue cross from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle.
Heifers were seen to top at £1481 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle and top pence per kilo of 239.5p was attained by Messrs Skelton, Low House, Maryport and purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir.

Prime Sheep – Spring lamb numbers remained hard to find, however trade for all classes were better than anticipated, despite the downturn in returns from the end of last week. The sale averaged 254ppk overall, being 15-20p better than forecasted.
The sale topped at £130.80 for a fantastic Texel cross lamb from Messrs KD & DE Millar & Partners, Crookholm Farm, Canonbie, which was purchased by Mr Robert Skelton. Topping the pence per kilo at 330.9ppk were a pen of fabulous 35kg Dutch Texel lambs from Mrs Storey, Woodhead, Haltwhistle which sold to Mr A Dawson.
