At Borderway Mart, Carlisle Monday 25th June, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 263 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with extra buyers coming to take advantage of the numbers at Carlisle.

Messrs Millar & Partners, Crookholm sold an outstanding Limousin cross cow for 856kg, 184.5ppk or £1579 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Lee & Sons, Agars Hill Farm, Hexham run of British Blue cross cows sold for 797kg, 184.5ppk or £1470, and to 698kg, 196.5ppk or £1371 all were purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Rome & co, Niven Hill Limousin cross cows topped at 803kg, 170.5ppk or £1369 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Richardson, Low Garth sold a British Blue cross cow for 715kg, 190.5ppk or £1362 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 200.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Kenny McCreary.

A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer with all classes being in demand. Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 923kg, 141.5ppk or £1306 to Dunbia. Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 842kg, 140.5ppk or £1183 to Kenny McCreary. Messrs Hunter & Son, Upmanby Farm sold the top priced British Friesian cow for 831kg, 137.5ppk or £1142 to Dunbia. Messrs Rome, Fauldie sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 758kg, 147.5ppk or £1118 to Sean McGimpsey. Holstein cross heifers sold to 161.5ppk from Laws Hall, 160.5ppk from Gaitsgill Hall Farm, 158.5ppk and 150.5ppk from Sorrow Stones and 154.5ppk from Wood Farm.

Prime Bulls: Another good entry of 102 prime bulls forward selling at a similar rate to that of last week although not quite as sharp. A day’s top of £1472 was achieved by Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm Wigton purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Simmentals sold to £1425 for Messrs Wright, Innerfield Farm Lockerbie purchased by Messrs McCreery, Ireland. Top overall pence per kilo of 224.5p was again achieved by Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton. Black and Whites sold to £1219 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir and top price per kilo of 185.5p for a Friesian from CC Livestock, West Mains, Dumfries purchased by Bowland Foods.

Prime Cattle: A smaller entry of 41 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling slightly easier on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith receiving £1662.57 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo and top overall was 239.5ppk for a British Blue cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton and was purchased by Bowland Foods, and to 232.5ppk for a Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well.

Steers sold to a top of £1638.26 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle and was purchased by Pioneer Foods and to £1633.48 from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well. Top pence per kilo of 223.5ppk was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie and secondly by Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle.

Prime Sheep – The weekly sale of prime lambs defied national trends with all vendors highly delighted with returns. Topping the sale at £128.80 was a pen of fantastic Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs JB & HM Mounsey, Ashfield which sold to Mr M Lomax. Messrs Bowe, Midtown topped the sale at 304.5p for a pen of cracking Texel cross lambs which sold to Mr A Dawson. Ewes were sharper on the week although less numbers forward to a top of £114.50 for Messrs Mounsey, Ashfield.
