Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle Monday 9th July, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – Once again a large show of 375 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with extra buyers coming to take advantage of the large numbers at Borderway.

A good show of beef cows were in great demand.  Messrs Harrison, Hill House Farm run of outstanding cows topped at 889kg, 227.5p, £2022 for a British Blue bought by Mr Owain Llyr and a Limousin cross cow topped at 805kg, 188.5p, £1517 also to Mr Owain Llyr.  Messrs Sowerby & Sons, Sycamore Rise cows topped at 911kg, 179.5p, £1635 bought for Messrs Worsley.  Messrs Logan, Humebyres sold a pure Limousin cow for 899kg, 175.5p, £1577 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Telfer, Tarnflatt Hall sold a Limousin cross cow for 724kg, 215.5p, £1560 to Mr Owain Llyr.  Messrs Story, High Street sold a British Blue cross for 208.5p to Mr Owain Llyr.  Messrs Dodd, Greenbrae sold a Limousin cross cow for 939kg, 165.5p, £1554 bought for Messrs Worsley.

A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer with trade for all classes being 10p back on the week.  Messrs Horsley, Woodhouse sold a Holstein cross cow for 936kg, 131.5p, £1230 to Dawn/Dunbia.  Messrs Workman, The Beeches sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross for 831kg, 137.5p, £1142 also to Dawn/Dunbia.  Messrs Neil & Sons, Thornington Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 805kg, 136.5p, £1098 to Mr Kenny McCreery.  Messrs Bowe & Sons, Calvo sold the top priced Friesian heifer which sold for 693kg, 158.5p, £1098 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close sold a Friesian cow for 809kg, 135.5p, £1096 to Dawn/Dunbia.  Messrs Forrester, Down by Rigg sold the top priced Holstein cross heifer for 154.5p.

A better show of 11 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk selling the top price British Blue stock bull for 1030kg, 192.5p, £1982 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and M/s Smith, North Boig selling the top price Limousin stock bull for 1264kg, 155.5p, £1965 to Pickstocks.

Prime Bulls: Another large entry of 119 prime bulls were forward with quality improved again, better fleshed cattle sold well. Top overall was a superb Limousin from Messrs Hansell, Nether Bar, Dumfries achieving £1881.29 and was purchased by Messrs McCreery, Ireland, and to £1737.26 from Messrs Logan, Humebyres, Kelso and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Simmentals sold to £1671.04 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie, and was purchased by Messrs McCreery. British Blues to £1652.39 from Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend, Coldstream and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Blondes sold to £1520 from Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill, Appleby.

Top overall price per kilo of 229.5ppk was received by Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend for a British Blue cross. Black and whites sold to a top of £1269.13 from Messrs McDowall, Culroy, Newton Stewart and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and top pence per kilo of 177.5ppk for the same animal.

Prime Cattle: A good offering of 42 prime steers and heifers were forward selling at a good level trade.  Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith achieving £1736.60 and purchased by Pioneer Foods.  British Blues topped at £1519.82 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 229.5p was achieved by Messrs Blake for another Limousin cross.

Heifers sold to a days top of £1402.99 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm and purchased by Messrs Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle, this same vendor also sold top pence per kilo of 229.5p twice for Limousin crosses.  More could have been sold.

Prime Lambs – The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep saw an entry of 1658 lambs and 211 ewes forward. Prime lambs met a very respectable trade to average £2 a kilo, far beyond pre-sale forecasts, with weight in particular extremely good to sell. Messrs R Carr, Little Bavington Farm, Capheaton, Newcastle topped the sale at £109.80 for a fantastic pen of Texel cross lambs which sold to Mr M Bowe.

Topping the pence per kilo at 259.4ppk was first time vendors Messrs J Lee & Son, Agars Hill Farm, Hexham with a pen of cracking Texel cross lambs weighing 35kg, and achieving £90.80 to Mr A Dawson. Messrs Todd, Longhurst, Brampton sold 40 fabulous lambs to average 48.18kg, 215.01ppk or £103.58 per head.
