At Borderway Mart, Carlisle Monday 30th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A smaller show of 347 Cast Cows, Bulls and Prime cattle were forward.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 228 cast cows were forward with a larger ring side of buyers which ensured well finished cows would be up 10-15p on the week. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot’s run of Limousin and Charolais cows topped at 860kg at 162.5p totalling £1397 for a Limousin cow and 854kg at 162.5p totalling £1387 for a Charolais cow bought by Sean McGimpsey and Charles Kirkpatrick and a Limousin heifer selling for 195.5p to Owain Llyr. Messrs Robinson, Bog Hall Farm’s run of cows topped at 676kg at 193.5p totalling £1308 for a Limousin cross brought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Little & Sons, Maryland Farm sold a Limousin cross for 675kgs at 185.5p totalling £1252 to Messrs Thompson.
A mixed show of Black and White cows were on offer with good fleshed cows selling for 10-15p more than last week and plain cows would be 5p up on the week. Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall sold an outstanding Holstein cross cow which sold for 902kgs at 145.5p totalling £1312 bought by Dunbia. Messrs Irving, Becton Hall cows topped at 730kgs at 146.5p totalling £1069 to Messrs Gracey. Messrs Ewbank, Tarn Hill sold a Holstein cross cow for 821kgs at 117.5p totalling £1019 to Dunbia. Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold a Holstein cross heifer for 153.5p and Messrs Sisson, Grain Head sold a Friesian heifer for 146.5p.
Only 6 stock bulls on offer with Messrs Langlands, Rushey Law Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 1102kgs at 134.5p totalling £1482 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold a Limousin stock bull for 1006kgs at 139.5p totalling £1403 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

Top overall was a Charolais from Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley, Hexham achieving £1911 purchased by Messrs McCreery, Ireland. Limousins sold to £1886 from Messrs Watson, Sanders Close, Brampton purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Messrs Annett, Widdrington Farm, Morpeth sold another to £1851 and top pence per kilo of 221.5p was achieved by Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle. More could have been sold to vendor’s advantage.

Prime Cattle: A small entry of 30 prime steers and heifers were forward, and were met by a good trade, however many more are required to satisfy demand.
Top overall was a British Blue cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle receiving £1664.88 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle sold the top priced Limousin cross to £1639.25. Top pence per kilo of 237.5p was achieved by the aforementioned British Blue.
Heifers peaked at £1476.97 from Messrs Sowerby, Terry Farm, Ormside and to £1469.33 from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth and top pence per kilo of 233.5p was attained by Messrs Sowerby for their second entry.
Many more could have been sold to vendor’s advantage.

Prime Lambs – A smaller show of prime lambs forward, trade slipped on the week to be inline with late last week’s returns. Lambs with plenty cover still saw prices of 190-200ppk. The sale topped at £95.80 for heavy Texels lambs show by Messrs Beaty, Stonewalls, Laversdale which sold to Mr Michael Bowe. Topping per kilo at 219.7p was a smart pen Texel cross lambs from Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft, Waverton which sold to Mr Robert Skelton. A larger show of ewes were a fantastic trade to a top of £119.50 for Texel ewes from Messrs Batty, Flimby Hall.
