At Borderway Mart, Carlisle Monday 6th August Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A good show of 344 Cast Cows, Bulls and Prime cattle along with 2300 prime and cast sheep were forward.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A larger entry of 258 cast cows were forward with well fleshed cows being in great demand. Messrs Jewitt, Gracies Farm, Barnard Castle sold a British Blue cow for 948kg, 188.5ppk or £1786 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mews, Glendue Farm, Hexham sold a British Blue cow for 803kg, 17-.5ppk or £1369 also to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow which sold to 811kg, 168.5ppk or £1377 to Dunbia. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House run of cows topped at 852kg, 153.5ppk or £1307 for a British Blue cross to Dunbia and to 725kg, 164.5ppk or £1192 for a Limousin cross purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Annett & So, Widrington Farm, Morpeth run of cows topped at 763kg, 167.5ppk for a Limousin cross purchased by Dunbia. Messrs Hunter, Bridge Mill sold the top priced Charolais cow which attained 908kg, 139.5ppk or £1266 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Findlay & Son, Hallington High Farm run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 909kg, 138.5ppk or £1258 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Swinbank, Brow Farm sold a Limousin cross heifer for £1955.
A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer with all classes being in demand. Messrs Parker, White Gates Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 806kg, 131.5ppk or £1059 to Dunbia. Messrs Hodgson & Partners, Holmes Mill cows topped at 889kg, 117.5ppk or £1044 to Mr Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Reed, Croft House sold a British Friesian cow for 766kg, 133.5ppk or £1022 to Dunbia. Holstein heifers sold to 148.5ppk from Messrs Chappelhow, High Grounds, and to 147.5ppk from Messrs Jefferson, High Pow. Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End sold a Holstein cross to 146.5ppk and Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown sold two to 145.5ppk or 141.5ppk. Prime Bulls: A smaller entry of 56 prime bulls were forward, selling sharper on the week for all classes. Top overall was a Limousin cross bull from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington who received £1651.86 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Charolais sold to £1518.98 from Messrs Young, Crummock Bank, Wigton. British Blue crosses sold to £1479.57 from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton, and Simmentals to £1432.59 from Messrs McClanachan, Millhill, Lockerbie and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Top pence per kilo of 223.5ppk was received by Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm for another British Blue cross. Black and whites were forward in good flesh and were seen to top at £1123.93from Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith and was purchased by Bowland Foods. The same vendor also received top pence per kilo of 171.5ppk for another from the same home.

Prime Cattle: A small entry of 30 prime steers and heifer were forward with all classes easily sold. A quality show was present and top overall was a Limousin cross steer achieving £1672.59 from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake run of steers topped at £1639.02 and from Messrs Anderson’s run of seven top overall was £1609.79. British Blue crosses peaked at £1608.43. Top pence per kilo of 232.5ppk was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown and secondly by Messrs Nicholson, The Lake.
Heifers peaked at £1482.97 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Topping the pence per kilo at 231.5ppk came from the same home but this time being purchased by King Street Butchers.

Prime Lambs – A larger show of 1950 prime lambs and 350 cast sheep forward. All classes of sheep were far dearer on the week with all outlets keen for sheep. Prime lambs averaged 187.4ppk and an SQQ of 189.34ppk, all well meated types were achieving in excess of 190p and beyond. The sale topped at £105.80 for a fantastic Beltex lamb from first time vendors JG Bewley, Mid Farm, Whitrigg which sold to Mr Skelton. Messrs Bewley’s lambs averaged 206.01ppk. Topping per kilo was Messrs JA & LA Thompson, Woodhead, Scaleby with an outstanding Beltex which sold at 250ppk to Mr Skelton with Messrs Thompson’s run averaging 213.32ppk. Heavy lambs remained good to sell with Messrs Reay, West Moorhouses, Maften topping the section at £104.80 a head which sold to Mr Michael Bowe. Mule lambs regularly sold over 180ppk, Messrs Browell, Quarry House, Hexham sold a run of 66 fantastic mule wedders to top at a staggering £103.50 for a pen of 8 with his run averaging £91.27 a head or 181.12ppk.
