Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 24th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where they had a smaller show of 452 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller entry of 372 cast cows and stock bulls were forward, with a more weathered show on offer, however trade would be as good as good as last week.

Messrs Jefferson, Aspatria Hall run of cows topped at 944kg, 150.5ppk or £1420 for a Charolais cow purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm sold a Limousin cross heifer for 712kg, 187.5ppk or £1335 to Mr Chapman. Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg farm sold the top priced Simmental cow for 831kg, 143.5ppk or £1192 to Dunbia. Messrs Dale, Airds of Balcary sold a Charolais cross heifer for 177.5p to George Watson.

A plain show of black and white cows were on offer with all classes being slightly cheaper on the week.

Messrs Yates, East Logan run of Holstein cross cows topped at 902kg, 126.5ppk or £1141 to Dunbia. Messrs Rome, Fauldie run of cows topped at 850kg, 132.5ppk or £1126 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End sold a Holstein cross cow for 708kg, 157.5ppk or £1115 to Mr Fell.

Leading black and white heifers prices include, British Friesians selling to 161.5ppk and 142.5ppk from Stoneybrook, Holstein crosses to 149.5ppk from Lane End Farm, 142.5ppk and 127.5ppk (x2) from Evening Hill Farm, 141.5ppk from Ling Daries, and MRI to 139.5ppk from Hill House (Woodman)

A smaller show of 10 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Chapman, Theakston Grange selling the top priced Simmental bull sold for 1039kg, 133.5ppk or £1387 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.

Prime Bulls: A poorer entry of 63 prime bulls were forward, selling to a similar trade to that of last week.

Top overall was a Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, Workington and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Top British Blue cross came from the same vendor and topped at £1532.21, with Charolais topping at £1466.73 from Messrs Wight, Carwood, Biggar.

Top pence per kilo of 228.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Finally Black and White bulls peaked at £1044.73 from Messrs Raven, Durdar House, Carlisle and was purchased by Bowland Foods.

Prime Cattle: A smaller entry of 24 prime steers and heifers were forward, with numbers falling short of requirements, trade remained strong. Top overall price of £1661.15 was achieved by Messrs Lockheart, Fauldingcleugh, Lockerbie for a Limousin cross, and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. The same vendor also received top pence per kilo of 224.5ppk.

Heifers seen a day’s top of £1488.212 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge Farm, Cockermouth and was also purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of 247.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Wilson, Bowscale, Maryport for a Limousin cross and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Prime Lambs and Cast Ewes – The weekly sale of prime sheep saw a larger number forward on the week. A better show of lambs met an increased demand leaving all vendors happy with their returns. The sale averaged £77.08, which shows an increase of £3 per head on last year’s corresponding fixture.

The sale topped at £100.80 on two occasions both with Dutch Texels, firstly from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, and secondly with Messrs Urwin, Hill House, who also topped the pence per kilo at 227.3ppk with a pen of five, selling to Mr A Dawson.

Cast ewes sold to a top of £102 for Texels from Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft.
