At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 8th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where they had a larger entry of 505 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 1982 prime and cast sheep.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A mixed show of 348 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer on Monday.
Messrs Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm run of outstanding Limousin cross and British Blue cross cows sold to average 718kg, 185.5ppk or £1331, and topped at 772kg, 185.5ppk or £1432, and to 759kg, 186.5ppk to £1415, followed by 682kg, 206.5ppk or £1408, all for Limousin crosses which were purchased by Owain Llyr. British Blue cross cow sold to 708kg, 191.5ppk or £1355 also from Mr Gary Bell and once again was purchased by Owain Llyr. Mr Hamish Goldie, South Bowerhouses run of Charolais cows topped at 976kg, 146.5ppk or £1429 and to 962kg, 140.5ppk or £1351 both purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Reed, The Knarr sold a British Blue cross cow to 698kg, 192.5ppk or £1343 to Owain Llyr. Mr George Brough, Old Rectory Farm sold a Limousin cow for 682kg 186.5ppk or £1271 and was purchased by Messrs Worsley. Messrs Robson, Middle Horsley Hope sold a Limousin cross cow for 624kg, 185.5ppk or £1157 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 658kg, 182.5ppk or £1200 and was purchased by Jewitts Meats.
A plain show of Black and white cows were on offer, with all classes selling less on the week.
Messrs Baird, Redhall sold a Holstein cross cow for 880kg, 109.5ppk or £963 to Mr Les Fell. Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower sold a Holstein cross cow for 837kg, 114.5ppk or £958 to Pickstocks. Messrs Teasdale & Sons, Halefield Farm sold a MRI for 820kg, 113.5ppk or £930 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wise, Low Tarns sold a Fleckvieh cow for 722kg, 128.5ppk or £927 to Mr Kenny McCreery. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm sold a Holstein cross cow to 859kg, 107.5ppk or £923, and to 841kg, 109.5ppk to £920 to Messrs Holmes and Mr Sean McGimpsey. Upper Barr run of Holstein cross cows topped at 800kg, 112.5ppk or £900 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick.

Prime Bulls: A much larger entry of 102 prime bulls were forward, whereby most classes would be slightly easier on the week. Top overall was a Blonde from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm, Penrith who attained £1735.77 and was purchased by Mr McCreery, Ireland. Limousin sold to £1625.78 from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan and was purchased by Mr Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. British Blues sold to £1547.29 from Messrs Pattinson, Temon Farm, Brampton and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie and to £1546.69 from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton. Simmentals sold t o£1426.95 from Messrs McClanachan, Millhill Farm, Lockerbie.
Top pence per kilo was attained by Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie, receiving 224.5ppk for a Limousin purchased by Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.
Black and white bulls topped at £1119.08 from Messrs Prudham, Whitefield, Brampton and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Topping the pence per kilo in this section was Messrs Story, Blackrigg, Longtown at 179.5ppk and was purchased by Bowland Foods.

Prime Cattle: A larger entry of 55 prime steers and heifers were forward with trade also slightly easier. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Nether Stenries Farm achieving £1623.75 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top British Blue steer was from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse receiving £1623.60. Top pence per kilo of 230.5ppk was attained twice, firstly by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and secondly by Messrs Storey, Limestone Cottage, Penrith, both for Limousin crosses.
Heifers peaked at £1588 from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse with a Limousin cross and to £1579 from the same home for a British Blue cross, both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Finally top overall pence per kilo was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby receiving 237.5ppk and was purchased by King Street Butchers.
