Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 22nd October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where once again a good show of 515 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward, along with 1741 prime and cast sheep.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A plainer show of 397 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer with a steady trade for all classes. Kedzlie Farm’s run of outstanding cows topped at 1035kg at 129.5p totalling £1340 for a Limousin and 874kg at 141.5p totalling £1236 for a Charolais cow purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Tom Holmes with young cows from the same home selling for 182.5p and 177.5p bought by Alan Jarvis and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ridley, Wood Hall’s run of cows topped at 725kg at 173.5p totalling £1257 bought by Owain Llyr with a Limousin cross heifer selling for 183.5p to George Watson. Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 826kg at 147.5p totalling £1218 to Mr Tom Holmes and a Limousin cross from the same home sold for 779kgs at 155.5p totalling £1211 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Thompson, Edenbanks sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 865kg at 133.5p totalling £1154 to Steven Bowes.

A plainer show of Black and White cows were on offer with Bays Leap Dairy Farm selling a Dairy Shorthorn for 878kg at 110.5p totalling £970 and a Holstein cross cow from the same home selling for 874kg at 110.5p totalling £965 bought by David Holmes and Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr David Irving, Brunt Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 818kgs at 113.5p totalling £928 to Les Fell. Messrs Parson, Home Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 771kgs at 118.5p totalling £913 also to Les Fell. Messrs Wilson, Howfield Farm sold Holstein heifers for 682kg at 132.5p totalling £903 and 843kgs at £139.5p totalling £896 bought by Alan Jarvis and Sean McGimpsey.

Only 6 stock bulls on offer with Messrs Murchie and Son, Hawkshole selling the top priced Limousin stock bull which sold for 1068kgs at 134.5p totalling £1436 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

Prime Bulls: A very good entry of 93 prime bulls were forward with all classes well bid for. Top overall was a Limousin cross from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria achieving £1635.64 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers and to £1621.76 for another from Messrs Hill, Whitewall Farm, Appleby, purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. British Blues sold to £1474.75 from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton. Top pence per kilo of 225.5ppk was paid for a Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, and to 224.5ppk for another from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton.

Black and whites peaked at £1130.63 for a British Friesian from Messrs Preston, Wed Holme, Wigton and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Topping the pence per kilo in this section was Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton at 173.5ppk also to Jewitt Meats.

Prime Cattle: A smaller entry of prime steers and heifers were forward with all classes remaining a very nice trade. Top overall was a superb Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle achieving £1636.80 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Farm, Cockermouth sold another to £1581.23. British Blues sold to £1453.82 from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and to £1347.68 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle and was purchased by Messrs Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo and top overall was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth achieving 233.5ppk and to 232.5ppk from Messrs Dent, Elm House for another.

Steers peaked at £1564.53 for a British Blue cows from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse and was purchased by Pioneer Foods.

Prime Lambs and Cast Ewes – Borderway’s weekly sale of prime sheep saw 1444 prime lambs and 297 cast sheep forward, slightly less numbers on the week. Trade took a rise to average 172ppk and £76.10 per head overall with plenty of lambs making 180ppk and beyond. The sale topped at £95.80 for a pen of 5 Texel cross lambs from Messrs Urwin, Hill House, Kirklinton which sold to Mr A Dawson. Suffolks sold £90.80 for a per from Messrs Walker, Morton Farm. Topping per kilo was Messrs AG Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie with a pen of 12 Beltex which sold at 229.1p to Mr M Lomax. Mule lambs sold to £86.30 for a pen of heavy lambs from Messrs Browell, Quarry House.

Ewes were again sharper with a top of £105.50 for Texels from Messrs Farrell, Low Moor.
