Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 29th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where once again a good show of 370 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 1651 prime and cast sheep. Numbers starting to tighten up resulting in the trade being sharper on the week.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – Smith and Shepherd, Glebelands sold a Limousin cow for 856kg, 148.5ppk or £1271 and was purchased for Messrs Worsley. Messrs Chappelhow, High Ground, sold a Limousin cow for 846kg, 149.5ppk or £1264 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm run of cows topped at 881kg, 136.5ppk or £1202 also to Mr Kirkpatrick for a Limousin. Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 722kg, 166.5ppk or £1202 to Mr George Watson. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm sold the top priced Saler cow for 674kg, 177.5ppk or £1196 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Thompson, East Unthank sold a British Blue cow for 598kg, 193.5ppk or £1157 to Mr Watson. Mr Jack Cartmell, Winter Cragg sold a British Blue cow for 658kg, 173.5ppk or £1141 to Mr Alan Jarvis.

Once again a mixed show of Black and White cows were on offer, however trade for all classes would be dearer on the week. Messrs Shepherd, Crownstone Farm sold a British Friesian cow for 629kg, 154.5ppk or £971 to Mr McGimpsey. Messrs Armour, Milton Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 843kg, 110.5ppk or £931 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hebson, Town End Farm sold a British Friesian cow for 881kg, 104.5ppk or £920 to Mr Kirkpatrick.

A small show of 6 stock bulls were on offer, with Messrs Carr, Little Barvington Farm selling the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1016kg, 114.5ppk to £1163. Messrs Tailford, Beacon Rigg Farm, sold a Limousin stock bull for 987kg, 114.5ppk £1130 both bought by Mr Kirkpatrick.

Prime Bulls: A smaller entry of 63 prime bulls were forward, and sold to a good trade for all fleshed types. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm, Annan and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. British Blue crosses sold to a top of £1561.80 from Messrs Frame, Little Gala Farm, Biggar. Charolais to £1555 from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries. Simmentals topped at £1533.63 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Waterbeck and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.

Top pence per kilo of 223.5ppk was received by Messrs R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton, Carlisle. British Blues from Messrs Wilson, Low Farm, Penrith received 215.5ppk and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Black and whites peaked at £1244 for a British Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton and to £1207 for another from Messrs Thompson, Gates Garth Hall, Maryport, and was purchased by Bowland Foods. Top pence per kilo of 178.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Jacskson, Skelton Wood End Penrith, and was purchased by Bowland Foods.

Prime Cattle: A good entry of 35 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling to a good trade. Top overall came from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle, receiving £1725.42 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Anderson, Crosby House Maryport run of seven peaked at £1699.43 for another Limousin cross steer. Top pence per kilo of 229.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Nelson, Rosgill Head, Penrith for a Limousin cross steer, and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Heifers seen a top of £1693.25 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Duff, C/o Burnside Farm, Lockerbie, and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold the top priced Charolais and British Blue cross to £1665.08 and to £1564.18. Top pence per kilo heifer and top overall came from Messrs Nelson, Rosegill Head selling a British Blue cross to 239.5ppk and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Limousin crosses to 237.5ppk from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Calrisle and was purchased by Whittakers Butchers, Accrington.

Prime Lambs and Cast Ewes – A smaller show of lambs were rather better to sell with the average again well ahead of others. The sale topped at £94.80 on two occasions firstly for 10 Beltex’s from Messrs Oliver, Walton Woodhead and secondly for a pen of Texel’s from Messrs Dean. Kirkhouse, which sold to Mr M Lomax and Mr R Skelton respectively. Suffolks topped at £84.80 from Seymour Farms, Leegate. Mules sold to £80.80 from Messrs Cowx, Town End Farm, Uldale. Top price per kilo was 241.6p for Beltex lambs from Messrs JG Bewley, Mid Farm which sold to Mr A Dawson.

A large show of ewes sold to £120.50 for Texels from the Stackyard.
