At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 5th November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where once again a good show of 551 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A huge show of 419 cast cows and bulls were presented to an increased ring side of buyers. A plainer and more weathered show was on offer resulting in well finished cows being sharper on the week.
Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House sold two outstanding British Bleu cows for 1024kg, 170.;5ppk or £1745 and to 909kg, 182.5ppk or £1658 and was purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Mr Keith Harryman, Keskadale Farm run of great Limousin cross and British Blue cross cows topped at 880kg, 169.5ppk or £1491, 838kg, 174.5ppk or £1462 and to 707kg, 184.5ppk or £1304 for Limousin and British Blue crosses to 780kg, 177.5ppk or £1384 and purchased by Messrs Worsley, Mr Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr.
Messrs Eve, Stubbsgill Farm sold a Limousin cow for 805kg, 153.5ppk or £1235 and was purchased by Mr Malcolm Allan. Messrs Vance, Low Skeog run of cows topped at 850kg, 142.5ppk or £1211 for a Charolais cow purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Iain Graham, Ross Castle Farm sold a Limousin cross heifer for 699kg, 170.5ppk or £1191 to Mr Malcolm Allan.
A plain show of 276 black and white cows were on offer, with Messrs Chappelhow, High Grounds selling the top priced Holstein cross cow for 706kg, 133.5ppk or £942 to Malcolm Allen. Messrs Story, Blackrigg sold a Holstein cross cow for 699kg, 138.5ppk or £926 to Mr Alan Jarvis.
Messrs Moore, Brayshaw sold a Montbeliarde cross for 709kg, 123.5ppk or £875 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Dart & Son, Flothers sold a Holstein cross cow for 810kg, 113.5ppk or £919 to Mr Kirkpatrick.
A small show of 7 stock bulls were on offer, with Messrs Braithwaite, Scales Farm selling a Limousin stock bull for 1078kg, 145.5ppk or £1568 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Moore, Brayshaw Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus bull for 941kg, £1237 also to Owain Llyr.

Prime Bulls: A larger entry of 91 prime bulls were forward, selling easier for plainer bulls, and a good trade for better shaped bulls. Top overall was a British Blue from Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, Newcastle, achieving £1650.73 and was purchased by Mr Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Simmentals sold to £1622.85 from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Limousins sold to £1621.53 from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Carlisle and was purchased by Mr Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Salers to £1413.47 from Messrs Prudham, Whitefield, Brampton.
Top pence per kilo of 227.5ppk for a Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton and was purchased by Bowlands Foods, Preston. British Blues to 215.5ppk from Messrs Telfer, Newton High House.
Black and whites peaked at £1126.34 for a British Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton and was purchased by Jewtitt Meats, Spennymoor. Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle attained top pence per kilo of 183.5ppk and was purchased by Bowland Foods.

Prime Cattle: A similar entry of 41 prime steer and heifers were forward with heifers proving a plainer offering. Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle achieving £1714.30 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold another to £1661.62. British Blues from Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands Farm, Maryport peaked at £1551.52 and a Parthenais cross from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow topped at £1491.44. Top pence per kilo of 228.5ppk was received by Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands for the aforementioned and to 117.5ppk for a Limousin cross.
Heifers seen a day’s top of £1413.75 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Gale, Hollins Farm, Cockermouth and £1386 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill Farm, Carlisle.

Prime Lambs and Cast Ewes – On Monday Borderway held their weekly sale of 2211 prime and cast sheep. Prime lambs were forward in greater numbers and better meated sorts saw a rise on the week with plenty 180-200p and further. Quality sheep were a flying trade, as good as anywhere and sold to a top of £104.80 for a pen of 6 Texel cross lambs from Messrs R & M Scott, Thirlwall Castle Farm which were purchased by Mr M Lomax these also were top per kilo at 249.5p.
A big show of ewes were a good trade throughout with a top of £112.50 for Texels from Bon Vista.
