Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 12th November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a smaller show of 390 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 277 cast cows were forward with all classes being much improved on the week.

Nilston Rigg farms sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 666kg, 187.5p, £1248 bought by Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Pickworth, Dotland Park sold a Limousin cross cow for 812kg, 151.5p, £1230 bought on behalf of Messrs Worsley.  Mr George Brough, Old Rectory run of pure Limousin cows topped at 723kg, 163.5p, £1182 and 764kg, 151.5p, £1173 bought by George Watson and Messrs Worsley.  Messrs Pickworth, Dotland Park sold a Limousin cross cow for 745kg, 157.5p, £1173 bought by Messrs Worsley.  Messrs Warnock, Dreva sold the top priced Simmental cow at 816kg, 139.5p, £1138 to Messrs Roberts.

A better show of black and white cows were on offer with trade being 5p up on the week.  Messrs Armstrong, Netherhirst sold 4 Fleckvieh bullocks aged 38 to 41 months old for 847kg, 133.5p, £1130; 789kg, 131.5p, £1037 and 767kg, 133.5p, £1023 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick, George Watson and David Holmes.  Messrs Sloan &Son, Woodend Farm sold a Fleckvieh cow for 832kg, 124.5p, £1035 to Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Skelton, Gill sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 882kg, 113.5p, £1001 to Steven Bowes.  Messrs Jefferson, High Pow sold a Holstein cross heifer for 664kg, 147.5p, £979 to Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Dart, Flothers sold the top priced Montbeliarde cow for 836kg, 113.5p, £948 to Les Fell.

A larger show of 9 stock bulls were forward, Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge sold a British Blue cross stock bull for 1131kg, 119.5ppk, £1351 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Rome & Co, Niven Hill sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 940kg, 129.5p, £1217 to Robert Medcalf.  Messrs Pattinson, The Flatt sold a Limousin stock bull for 896kg, 127.5p, £1142 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

Prime Bulls: A good entry of 78 prime bulls were forward selling slightly easier on the week.  Top overall was a Charolais from Messrs Warnock, Dreva, Biggar achieving £1687.34 and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Limousins sold to £1625.70 from Messrs Annett, Widdrington Farm, Morpeth and British Blues sold to £1459.71 from Messrs Brannen, Scar Top, Penrith both purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.  Top pence per kilo of 233.5p was attained by Messrs Wilson, Reddings, Moffat and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and 229.5p for another from Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm, Penrith.  British Blues sold to 220.5p from Messrs Brannen, Scar Top, Penrith.

Black and whites peaked at £1149.17 for a Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton purchased by Bowland Foods and £1138.43 from Messrs Preston, Wed Holme House, Wigton.  Top price per kilo of 177.5p for a Holstein from CC Livestock, South Carthat, Dumfries was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

Prime Cattle: A larger entry of 44 prime steers and heifers were forward selling slightly easier on the week in line with the national trend.  Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport who achieved £1646.26 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, the same vendor also sold another to £1627.56.  Top pence per kilo of 224.5p was received by Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend, Coldstream for a Limousin cross purchased by Messrs McGimpsey, Annan.

Heifers seen a day’s top of £1624.50 for a British Blue from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Limousins sold to £1611.20 from Messrs Jones, Ashcroft, Carlisle and purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton.  Top overall pence per kilo of 237.5p was achieved by Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse and purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Blondes sold to 234.5p from Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend and purchased by Messrs McGimpsey, Annan and Limousins to 232.5p from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse purchased by Pioneer Foods.

Prime Lambs and Cast Ewes – On Monday 12th November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime lambs where numbers were slightly less on the week.  A high number of heavy lambs proved to be no better however lighter weighed lambs (39-43kg) were sharper again on the week to average 181ppk.

The sale topped at £101.80 for 6 outstanding Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Haltwhistle which sold to Mr R Skelton.  Topping pence per kilo was Messrs Harrison, Lesson Hall, Wigton who sold 40kg Texel lambs at 242p to Mr A Dawson.

A smaller number of ewes than seen of late topped at £117.50 for Texels from Messrs Pearson, Fairhill, Alston.
