At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 10th December Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a larger show of 480 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 340 cows were forward with a plainer show on offer but trade being similar to last weeks.

Messrs Coates, Rainscar sold the top priced British Blue cross cow which sold for 801kgs at 176.5p totalling £1413 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Iain Graham, Rose Castle Farm sold the top priced Limousin cross cow which sold for 738kgs at 171.5p totalling £1265 bought for Messrs Worsley. Messrs Gibb, Jubilee Buildings’ run of Blonde cows topped at 730kgs at 168.5p totalling £1230 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Nixon, Hunters Hall sold a Limousin cross cow for 668kgs at 181.5p totalling £1212 bought by Jewitts Meats. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot’s run of Limousin cows topped at 176.5p(x2) and 168.5p bought by Owain Llyr and Alan Jarvis.  H & K Farms’ run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 769kgs at 147.5p totalling £1134 to Les Fell.

A plainer show of Black and White cows were on offer with plainer cows being dearer but meaty cows being slightly less on the week. Messrs Johnston, Cote House sold a Holstein cross heifer for 678kgs at 139.5p totalling £945 to Les Fell. Messrs Brown, Lane End Farm sold a Swedish Red heifer for 667kg at 135.5p totalling £903 to Pickstocks. Blencogo House Farms sold a Holstein cross heifer for 672kg at 129.5p totalling £870 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Threlkeld, Bailey Town sold a Holstein cross cow for 796kgs at 107.5p totalling £855 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

A small show of 8 stock bulls were on offer with trade being steady. Messrs David Carr & Son, Highwood Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 976kgs at 133.5p totalling £1302 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wheatley & Son, Home Farm sold the top priced British Blue stock bull at 1018kgs at 125.5p totalling £1277 to Owain Llyr.

Prime Bulls: Yet another big entry of 94 prime bulls were forward with quality well down on the week, and all best sorts were as dear as last weeks. Top overall was British Blue from Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, Stocksfield receiving £1616.27 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. The next best was for a Limousin cross from Messrs Irving, Bectonhill, Canonbie receiving £1513.71.

Top overall pence per kilo of 233.5ppk was attained by Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill, Appleby for a Limousin cross and was purchased by Field Fresh, Wales. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith sold another Limousin to 230.5ppk and was purchased by Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.

Black and whites peaked at £1099.73 from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Top pence per kilo of 175.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Reed, Croft House, Carlisle and again purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Prime Cattle: A very good show of 41 prime steer and heifers were forward whereby trade was slightly easier but on the whole very good. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer for Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues sold to £1417 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 227.5p was attained by Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth. Heifers saw a day’s top of £1551 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Fawkes, Welton Farm, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods and 239.5p was top overall pence per kilo for Messrs Jones, Ashcroft, Carlisle for a superb Limousin cross.

Prime Lambs and Cast Ewes – On Monday Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep. A bigger show of lambs met a great enquiry for all classes to average 191.94ppk overall (199.24ppk SQQ) and £82.99 per head.

The top price of the day was £113.80 for a fantastic Dutch Texel lamb from loyal weekly supporters R & BS Laird and Sons, Unity Farm, Brampton which sold to Mr Andrew Dawson. Topping per kilo again with Dutch Texel lambs was another great supporter Messrs TP Wigham, Hargill House who sold lambs to 275p (40kgs £110) to Mr Robert Skelton. Messrs Wigham’s run of lambs sold to average 41.1kg at 249.9p totalling £102.73.

Mules sold to £84.30 for a pen from Messrs Fisher, Reaygarth, Brampton to Michael Bowe with a pen of 38 Texel x Herdwick lambs from Messrs Weir, High Lodore selling at £76.30 (200.8ppk).
