Borderway Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 7th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where they had a large show of 475 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with 2578 prime and cast sheep forward.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 332 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer, with vendors travelling from as far as Aberdeen to Durham to take advantage of the large ring side of over 20 buyers.

Mr Andrew Gammie, Drumforber Cottage, run of cows topped at 863kg, 174.5ppk or £1505 for a Limousin cross and to 906kg, 143.5ppk or £1300 for an Aberdeen Angus purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Mr Kenny McCreery. Messrs Johnston, West Wharmley, Hexham run of cows topped at 931kg, 154.5ppk or £1438 for a Charolais cow and to 682kg, 188.5ppk or £1285 for a British Blue cross purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick and Jewitts.

Messrs Sisterson, Newlands Haugh Farm, Consett run of cows topped at 863kg, 163.5ppk or £1411 and to 862kg, 151.5ppk or £1305 for a Charolais cows purchased by Malcolm Allan. Messrs Watson, Sanders Close sold a pure Limousin cow which sold for 841kg, 155.5ppk or 31307 to Malcolm Allan. Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 680kg, 186.5ppk or £1268 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Keaston, Wyse Hill Farm, Barnard Castle run of cows topped at 681kg, 180.5ppk or £1229 for a British Blue cross purchased by Mr Les Fell.

A small show of 8 stock bulls were forward with Kilnstown Farm Ltd selling the top priced Saler stock bull for 1137kg, 147.5ppk or £1677 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Nicholson, Cobble Hall Barn sold the top priced Limousin stock bull which sold for 1016kg, 144.5ppk or £1468 also to Owain Llyr.

A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer with trade being slightly less on the week. Wormanby Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow which sold for 649kg, 145.5ppk or £1944 to David Holmes. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head sold a Holstein cross cow for 656kg, 141.5ppk or £928 to Les Fell. Messrs Gillespie, High Ploughlands sold two Holstein cross cows for 643kg, 141.5ppk or £909 and to 686kg, 132.5ppk or £908 and were purchased by Mr Les Fell, and Alan Jarvis.

Prime Bulls: The first sale of prime bulls of the year saw a good entry of 92 on offer, with trade dearer to that achieved prior to Christmas. Top overall was paid to Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Wishaw for two Limousin bulls achieving £1741.51 and £1737.06 purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford, and Messrs McCreery, Northern Ireland. Charolais sold to £1676.02 from Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley, Hexham and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Simmentals to £1603.13 from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan and British Blues to £1595.03 from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton. Top overall pence per kilo of 232.5ppk for a British Blue cross from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria and was purchased by Mr Geoff Nutter. Another Limousin cross from the same home sold to 228.5ppk and was purchased by Ralph Pearson.

Black and whites peaked at £1203.13 for a Holstein from Blencogo House Farms, Wigton and was purchased by Messrs McCreery, Northern Ireland. Top pence per kilo of 179.5ppk was received by Messrs Huddleston, The Green, Carlisle for a British Friesian purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Prime Cattle: A good entry of 61 prime steers and heifers forward with all classes easily maintaining recent rates. Top overall of £1625.13 was achieved for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton  sold another to £1609.67. British Blues sold to £1598.03 from Messrs Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Charolais crosses sold to £1520.51 from Messrs Faulder, Houghton House, Carlisle and was purchased by Mr Les Fell. Top pence per kilo of 231.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow for a different Limousin cross steer purchased by Pioneer Foods.

Heifers seen an overall top of £1622.88 from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow again purchased by Pioneer  Foods. Top overall was again consigned by Low Whinnow Farm, with a Limousin selling for 241.5ppk.

Prime Lambs and Cast Ewes – The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep was a good entry of 2358 hoggs and 220 caste ewes and rams forward.

A great show of prime hoggs were good to sell from start to finish with all classes keenly bid for. An overall average of 191.28ppk (SQQ 202.55ppk) was achieved.

The sale topped at £107.80 for a great pen of Beltex lambs from Messrs Hall, New Houses, Hallington which were sold to Mr R Skelton. Messrs Scott, Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead sold a fabulous pen of Dutch Texel lambs topping the sale per kilo at to 257.1ppk and sold to Mr A Dawson. T & J Airey, New Grange, Dearham sold 43 smashing Beltex lambs to average 230.93ppk or £100.91 per head and to a top of £15.80.

Suffolk lambs sold to £100 per head for a pen of 19, from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown.

Mules peaked at £90.30 twice, firstly from Messrs JJ &E Lawson, Hundith House, Bothel, and A & D Smith, Kelmore Hills, Distington.

Hill sheep sold to £86.30 twice, firstly for Cheviots from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and secondly for Blackface from Messrs Fisher Smalmstown.

A good quality show of cast ewes were a flying trade and sold to a top of £143 for Texels from Messrs Graham, Hallrigg, Penrith.
